600e Hang / Lock / Blackscreen on Win 2000 or XP Install

#1 Post by thinkflat » Fri May 13, 2005 10:03 am

thinkpad 600e 400MHz P2 working fine with win 98, se, or ME but will not allow to install Windows 2000 or windows XP. the bios is the newest (36WW) for this model and gives no errors on complete testing. All my used periferie hardware and addons are fully operational with other 600e.

When trying to install the NT based OS the setup procedure will go just to the formatting of Harddrive and then the system completely shuts down (HD, Screen, cd-drive, fan) but with the power leds still on. i need to hold the power button at least 5 seconds to turn the leds off afterwards.
there is a quite similar thread already discussed here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... rd+install
but my machine isnt overclocked and does not have any memory problems.

i tried around quite a lot of time with this bug and figured out that it must have something to do with the PIO mode of the IDE Controller.
I got a working windows 2000 installation on a friends 600e harddrive and put it in my TP. Same error after the windows startup / splash screen. i started in safe-mode an voila, windows comes up correctly. i continued with the try and error method (deactivating all devices step by step in control panel and starting windows in normal mode) this pointed to a surprising problem with the IDE HD and CD-Rom PIO / DMA mode.

forcing the IDE Devices to PIO mode will allow a normal starting windows 2000. Unfortunately this works only as long as you dont access the DVD or CD-rom drive. opening the drive in the explorer will work, but starting a copying process or executing a setup from the disk will crash the system. Same error when putting in a USB memory stick and accessing it.

Now my question goes out to any users who experienced a similar problem, is there a way to optimize/ maintain the DMA setting of the Thinkpad in Bios or Config Utility? windows DMA settings will not give a better run. Is there a known issue with any of the internal hardware? causing interrupt or DMA problems?

pre-thanks and regard, jan
