T40 won't power up

#1 Post by jsonander » Fri May 13, 2005 10:51 am

My T40 (2373-19U), that has been problem-free, won't power up - when I press power the battery light illuminates, and the light just to the left of it (I don't know what it signifies since I don't have a user's manual, and the service guide doesn't show it). It's strange because the fan turns on, but the processor light doesn't blink, like it's asleep or in hibernation. I installed Mozilla's Firefox just before I had turned it off and used it successfully, and hadn't restarted so I am thinking maybe that has something to do with it - I also just installed anti-virus a month ago and do live updates so I am pretty well protected. Anyway any ideas, I would really appreciate. I live and work in a less-developed country so service is hard to come by. Thanks, Jason

have you tried unplugging and restarting holding down access ibm button? sounds like service may be viable alternative even if you have to be without it for awhile.

If you do? U can remove the battery and power adapter and tap the power button for at least 13 times. On the 13th time, hold down the power button and gently release it. When you finish that cycle try to power up the tp with only the ac adapter connected and see what happens...

Sounds like a system board failure. The same thing happened to my T40 in March 2004. I'd hit the power switch and the fan would come on, but the screen would be blank and the system wouldn't boot.

Call tech support and ask to arrange for a system board replacement.

I'm having the same isue now with my T42... which is unfortunately out of its three year warranty period. (yes, I know the T42 hasn't been for sale for three years. It's a unique situation to say the least.)

Is there anything I can do short of replacing the system board?

I have the same problem of not firing up, except about 20% of the time (usually when I shake the machine!) it gets as far as Windows, then nearly always freezes within 5 minutes.
