Anybody using T42p with external >=1600x1200 DVI?

#1 Post by davewilkie » Fri Jun 18, 2004 1:21 pm

I have several 2379DYU T42p's and I'd like to place ~21 inch external 1600x1200 LCD's on the desktop using the DVI pass through from the mini-dock. I read the note on ATI video driver installation and gave that a shot using the FireGl T2 driver from ATI's website, but it completely hangs the T42p during installation immediately after unpacking files. I also downloaded Patje's modder and it complains that the correct files are not present-and closes. Perhaps I'm starting with the wrong driver. I am assuming (don't know for a fact) that replacing IBM's driver is still required for external DVI at greater than 1280 resolution.

Has anyone done this successfully on this machine? If so, what driver and process did you use? I'd greatly appreciate any words of wisdom.

Uninstall all of the IBM video drivers first (put it down to the generic VGA driver-- when you reboot, WinXP will try to reinstall the IBM drivers, just say no), get the Catalyst set from ATI's website, run it (it will fail after unpacking when it tries to run the setup), then download and run the Mobility Modder, then go back and run the Catalyst setup from where it unpacked on your drive (this is not the same thing as the first time you ran the Catalyst set.) That's it.

Patje's Mobility Modding: http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/ (you need the official ATI driver from www.ati.com)

Omega Drivers: http://www.omegadrivers.net/ (it includes the ATI driver)

Thanks for the replies folks--
Yes, I've tried all of this, and in the order specified. I'm selecting ATI FIREGL T2 as the display type in the Mobility Modder, and I'm selecting C:\ATI as the file directory (and this IS the root where the new driver has been unpacked), but when I press 'start mod' the modder aborts with the message: “the directory does not contain the correct files, please check the directory and try again”
Makes me think I've got the wrong driver, but I've taken it from the ATI site at: http://www.ati.com/support/products/wor ... submit.y=6
Have you done this on a T42p?
Thanks,
Dave

not trying to steal the post or anything but I have aquestion. I will be using my FireGL T2 128MB mostly for games (in orther words, I won't be using AutoCAD, photoshop or anything related). I wonder which drives should I install for the video card and how can I do it?

Sci-Clone,

For games definitely use either the modder or the Omega driver. IBM's ATI driver has compatibility problems with games (some of the games simply refuse to start etc.).

Dave,

You need the normal ATI driver, not the one for ATI FireGL. You can download it from the home page of ATI (bottom left corner) or click here.

Gman, Cynic and others,
Just a note to express my thanks. Gman's clarification that I needed to use the Catalyst drivers was the tip I needed. I'm writing this from a T42p driving a Samsung 213T LCD in 1600 x 1200 and it's just fantastic.
For others then, my result:
Strip down to VGA driver
Downloaded catylyst driver: wxp-w2k-catalyst-8-02-040515a-15958c.exe from
Downloaded Patje's catalyst mobility modder program at [url=http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/]
Launched .exe above which unpacked files to a specified directory and then hung the system.
Cold boot, followed by launch of modder. Directed modder to root of unpacked drivers/directories. Modder ran most of the way through but didnt' seem to succeed in a clean exit, so I followed Patje's suggestion and completed the driver installation by running 'driver update' from desktop/properties/settings/advanced/adapter/properties/driver
Shut down, plugged in monitor, worked 1st time.
Thanks again,
Dave

I know this is an old thread, but I am looking for an update to the instructions for installing the ATI Catalyst driver on a T42p with FireGl T2. Is a 'modder' program still required?
