t60 15" X1400 GPU running at 70C normal?

#1 Post by fefrie » Mon Nov 25, 2013 8:21 pm

I just bought a t60 and running with xp and TPfancontrol, I see that the GPU runs hot at 75C on idle.

If running an online game, it goes up to 80C (although the fan is running hard)

I removed the fan and cleaned and relubed it (making noise) and when replacing it also put thermal compound on the gpu pad as well.

It dropped GPU temps 5C.

However, the GPU refuses to drop lower than 64 under any circumstance.

So as a compromise I've adjusted TPFC to turn on at 69 and turn off at 65.

It's not much of a temperature range, but its enough to keep the fan off 90% of the time.

Does this all sound normal for everyone?

Yes, it is normal. Mine does the same, and I've also decided to use a high threshold temperature for the GPU. There's a long thread on it on this forum, try searching for "T60 X1400 noise" etc. It has been proposed the GPU temperature sensor is inaccurate and the actual temperature is much lower. For example, after having the computer in sleep mode and waking it up, temperature is high in no time and the curve of the increase seems to suggest it did not start at room temperature when you opened the lid.
