Using "locked" F keys and End key no longer possible ?

#1 Post by Puppy » Tue Nov 26, 2013 5:22 am

There is very interesting report related to X240 keyboard http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Th ... -p/1330763

Those who still use F keys on daily basis like software developers should read it. The user reports that if you lock the F keys by Fn-Lock you can not use End key because it becomes Insert key

Are other 40 models also affected ?

And all Lenovo has in defense is to avoid the subject, why don't they just admit they failed, and stop humiliating them selves.

They have just started to delete comments about the subject (not the first time).

Because of their crappy moderating (specifically deleting posts) I rarely visit that forum.
It's a waste of time usually, because anything out of line gets suppressed.
They are behaving like the 'cold war' communists of old...

Do the new models have a BIOS option to permanently switch the default behavior of the Function keys (without the Fn-lock)? I wonder if that affect the End/Ins key behavior.

I find it fascinating how fast I could stop caring about Thinkpads ever since Lenovo decided that it no longer wants to be a market leader / trendsetter, and settled for making Apple clones. So fast that I didn't even realize that the new models managed to break the keyboard worse than it was already broken. :)

Where are the loyalists to explain to us "dinosaurs" that it's actually better? :D

Oh, and do you know the irony of this? It is that it's people like the original poster on the Lenovo forums, who see Insert as a "useless key", that led the geniuses in the keyboard department to view this as yet another key that can be eliminated to make the keyboard more "sexy-looking". It's hardly used, so we can just assign it as a secondary function, right? Except, oops, we implemented it poorly, and now you cannot use standard function keys and the far more useful End key at the same time. :)

I still don't get who actually wants that. To make the keyboard layout useless & crappy (TM) needs some investments. Without that it would save the cost of it and the keyboard layout stayed still useable. Is there that much customers that wants to pay for "sexy-looking" keyboard (I count myself as pervert because the keyboard is not sexy comparing to the old models at all :D) over keyboard that can be actually used for productive work ?

It's always about compromises... and in compromises, someone must have the short end of the stick... huh?
In Lenovo's novel form over function paradigm, enthusiast users are to pay the price for that slick and modern keyboard. But hey, who cares about them, really? :)

Not that I want to sound arrogant, but you know what? I'm chuckling at those powerusers who personally bought those X240's and complain about them. I have no compassion for them. They had it coming, they were fully aware of Lenovo's autistic attitude since the X230 and they still bought the d.a.m.n. impaired laptops.
That'll teach them.

<Quizzical look> You realize you've basically got the same group of people moderating both forums, don't you?

Yep, but even compromises can be made in multiple ways. And some of these ways are smarter than others. :)

Who would even think about that ten years ago ? Can you imagine a company to sell notebook with such basic functionality flaw ?

The number of things you have to check before buying is ridiculous now. Does the A key really works as expected, and the B key ... and Z ? Can annoying dynamic brightness be turned off ? Or the fuzzy hardware/driver based anti-aliasing ? Etc ...
