T61 upgraded to 2.4GHz T7700 running at 2.6GHz?

#1 Post by Martin_172 » Tue Nov 26, 2013 5:45 pm

Hi guys, odd one here done a bit of google searching and cant seem to find anything on it.

Ive recently bought a T61 with Intel graphics, it came with a 1.8GHz Core2Duo which ive just swapped out for a T7700 2.4GHz along with 8GB of ram and an SSD, ive installed a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate X64.

When opening up CPU-Z to have a peak at the specs of the CPU it identifies it correctly as a T7700 with a FSB of 800 but its running with a maximum multiplier of 13, giving 2.6GHz??

Windows and Bios are detecting it as a T7700 @ 2.4GHz.

is this just a bug in cpuz causing issues?

It's not unusual for it to do this. Sometimes it spikes higher than the specified speed when it's running on 1 instead of two cores. Speedstep do this automatically. This is much more common with newer CPU but I've seen it on a few older one. Try rebooting the system. After upgrading CPU I, upon first turning it on, Windows will load a driver and request a reboot. After reboot CPUZ reports more accurate reading.

No this is not a bug.
From santa rosa (965) chipset Intel have invented "Toorbo boost" (or more correct: IDA - Intel Dynamic Acceleration) technology.
T7700 can use "Toorbo boost" http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/C ... _P%29.html

I could see upper multiplier only a couple of times (on T9500).

ahh that makes sence so its just the turbo boost that's running it at 2.6ghz, it seems to run at that 90% of the time! windows power settings are set to high performance (I don't use it on battery power)

its running the middleton bios which I believe enables IDA? so that would explain it

cheers!

Middleton bios can ebable Dual IDA - both cores can work at maximal multiplier. But for enabling Dual IDA you need some more stuff:
