Torn Between The X240 & T440s: Thoughts?

#1 Post by bmstrong » Sun Dec 01, 2013 3:49 pm

I'll be waiting a couple weeks for the FHD option on the X240. After that? I'm torn. I'll be keeping this guy for the next couple years. I'll be removing the stock HD completely and installing a new SSD and dropping Arch or, if I'm lazy, Antergos, onto it. Removing all the Windows stickers and traces of Windows from the machine.

I'm already going to spend the $30 for the Intel Wireless 7260AC with Bluetooth 4.0. The SSD and max RAM upgrades will be be from Crucial. I'm wondering just how much of a difference going up from the stock i3 on the X240 or the stock i5 on the T440s actually will benefit me. Is it worth the cost to move to the best processor or is the middle option worth it? I'm looking for the best price to performance ratio. This is going to be my all in one machine for the next couple years. I'll be working, gaming, traveling and playing on it.

And my final concern is size. I need this guy to be portable. How much bigger and heavier is the T440s over the X240? Does the size justify the larger screen and the larger space for my wrists while typing?

Any thoughts?

Most of your questions are highly subjective and since we just met, it's hard for me to answer for you. I believe the T440s is about a half a pound heavier than the X240. One thing I would say is FHD on a 12.5" will have much smaller text than a 14". To me that makes the T440s more palatable. For typical usage I don't think the i3 or i5 makes a significant difference. My i3 X220i is still a very capable notebook, but if you're pushing things, the i5 will be a bit faster. I find my X220i to be excellent to type on. I would expect the same of the X240, though I have heard of complaints about the short palm rest from time to time.

For an all in one machine I would go with the T440s. I bought a x220 before and returned it as the palm rest was too small, and the display was also too small for my uses. The 14 inch FHD display is fine as is the weight and the superior build quality.

Can't answer your questions but do know that they fixed the palmrest length problem with the X240. That was a killer on the X230 and other models.

What I really need is a 230/240 head to head. I need to see the actual size difference.

Nope.

Heavily leaning towards the 240 with 8GB. Hoping that a single 16 shows up in 2014.
