WTB: Fan for T40 (uses R51 board)

#1 Post by atanasoff » Sat Dec 07, 2013 8:51 pm

I believe it's the same fan either way, it appears to now have the "long" fan.

I have a long M10 fan I took out of a T42 (FRU 13R2657). It IS giving fan error message but it does still come on (just tested on T23 parts unit) so maybe RPM isn't correct. I've seen a couple recent threads saying you could oil the motor to potentially fix it. I was not aware that would work (or was even advisable) with motors like these. I was going to scrap the copper from it but would sell it for $8 shipped if you want to play with it. Let me know.

Ah, that part won't fit (needs an R50 fan not a T4x). Considering that one can have problems with a known good part I have no interest in installing known bad ones.

Throwing oil from a vibrating bearing around the insides of your laptop is probably not a good idea ...

R5x fans do not fit in a T4x model, the R5x fans are thicker/higher than the T4x fans!
If you have Intel GPU or ATI 7500 GPU, you can use any 'short' T4x fan.
If ATI 9000/9600 graphics, you need the 'long' fan, either M10 from T41/T42 or better: M24 from T43.

It is an ATI 9000.
Does this mean it needs an original T series, not R fan? Since I need to order a part, I can get whatever works best/makes less noise. How do I find the correct part number?

thanks!

btw, the machine died a couple years ago, one of your boards brought it back to life. This board is holding up pretty well so far, the ibm parts averaged about 3 years.

Download the HMM from T40/T41/T42 and T43 from here: http://download.lenovo.com/express/hmm_ ... ebook.html
You'll find the P/N in there.

Now read this again:

Looks like I need FRU 26R9074 originally for T43 "Fan assembly, long M24 (lead-free)"
I shall reserve the ten pound hammer readied to make the other part fit.

Edit: Searching that PN shows comments that the T43 fan is loud compared to the original. So fan assembly M10 FRU 13R2657 is the thing needed.

What is the FRU number of the current noisy fan?

Got a complication.

This has an ATI 9000 (device mgr sez)
The HMM shows fan 13N5442 OR M10 13R2657 depending on the machine type. My machine type is now "none of the above" bc the main board is from an R51. Can't use an R series fan, that's too thick.

Found a ebay listing for the M10 fan, the seller has a notice:

T41p T42 T42p long Fan and heat sink
FRU 13R2657 41W5204 13N5347
Compatible with all T4 R5 series, 14" or 15" with ATI 9600 or FireGL graphic card
This Fan is not compatible with T4/R5 with ATI 9000.
They could, of course, be wrong, but they took the trouble to photo + label 6 different T4/R5 fans. No point opening up the machine and attempting to install something that almost fits.

So do I need 13N5442, M10 13R2657 or the ebay notice is wrong and either will fit?

Don't know yet, I will have to open up the machine to find that. Toolset is not with me, have to dig that out of storage.

If the board is really from R51, you need a short fan from that machine since none of the pre-R52 models had long fans, GPU was passively cooled.

And it's the same fan for all R50/p and R51 models, BTW.

Took a look.

The part installed now is marked
"91P9251 Fan Long" FRU 91P9252"
3 screws, plus clean + restore thermal gunk. Simples.

Question: if I get a used take-out fan, how do I replace the thermal rubber needed to bridge the fan and GPU? I'm not into hand-precision bending the copper heatsink, it appears that the fan HS needs to be dead flat or you have an air gap.
