X230 "Assembled in USA"

#1 Post by kevinc » Fri Dec 13, 2013 10:34 pm

Where are X230s assembled? Lenovo only has one X230 currently on the website, marked "assembled in USA." It's a base machine, 2320HNU, with a 3320M processor and non-IPS panel, WIN 7 Pro. There aren't any other configuration options. Is this something new?
Thanks

The vast majority of ThinkPads still come from China.

That particular X230 is assembled in North Carolina, most likely "from U.S. and non-U.S. components for Lenovo" as the stickers in the old days used to say...

Part of what they said in their press release when they launched the North Carolina assembly line was that they wanted to be able to support quick ship models around the holidays. It would be nice if they allowed you to customize the model a little bit, but I guess that's part of the trade off with quick delivery...

I wasn't aware of the North Carolina facility and just read the press release. With this X230 they probably want to be able to supply the "must have" Christmas shopper. Either that or they just found a shipping container full of 2320HNUs. I'll be using it for a few years, so I'll wait until I can spec it out the way I want.

Don't kid yourself: the facility in NC has been there for years, handling custom orders for government and "important" customers.

Everything else is just a clever marketing ploy on Lenovo's part.

This post brought to you courtesy of a (modded) T43p, which sports a sticker on the bottom stating: "Assembled in the US of US and non-US components for Lenovo"...I've owned a garden variety of T42/p, T43/p, T60/p and T61/p units displaying the same info...

I think it actually is a different line. They have indeed done US assembly for those customers as you stated, but the recent press releases do refer to a new production line (albeit a very small one).
