Freshly installed win 7 64 bit on new SSD, can't update?

#1 Post by Procter » Fri Dec 20, 2013 9:08 am

Just installed a new mSATA SSD drive to replace my crapping out X301 HDD. OS installed fine via CD (only windows 7, no sp). After the installation, I went directly to install thinkvantage system udpate and installed all the software updates there. Everything installed fine, including Intel AMT drive, Thinkpad access connection, UltraNav driver etc, only things that failed are several windows 7 update module somehow pushed through Lenovo. (I think I've read someone reporting similar prolbems, those win 7 updates K****** were always failing).

Now after that, I checked my windows update, and it did not work. I hit update button, it popped out warning saying "windows update could not start, service is not starting. may need to restart system". Restarting system would not fix it. I tried to install update manually, the installer popped out error msg 0x800 type of error. so I'm stuck.

I googled it, and it looked like a problem with original Win 7's incompatibility with newer HDD/SDD with 4096k column? One thread suggested it was the interl matrix storage driver problem, and I need to install new rapid storage driver. Uninstalled those drivers, same error, installed a version of newer rapid storage driver(could not install the newest 12/12/13 version coz incompatible system error, I think I used 11/02/12 driver), now I could not get into windows (stuck at the splash screen). I may be able to log in through safe mode and uninstall that, but still it looks like problems unsolved.

THere is another method people reported I haven't tried, which is burning the sp1 dvd and install that directly.

So what exactly is this problem? Have you guys got any experiences dealing with it? Thanks.

Had the same problem on a T400 with 32 bit Win7. Tried everything that came up on google, nothing worked. I wiped the drive, and reinstalled. All is fine now. Once you install fresh, first step run all Windows updates first, except for hardware. Then run Lenovo updates including hardware. By then, you will likely have some additional Windows updates to install.

Had the same problem on a few T6x and T500 Win 7 install. The problem was a Lenovo Update concerning Intel AMT. It blew away Windows Update and Windows Explorer. Did progressive Windows 7 restore and was able to isolate that the Intel AMT update from Lenovo was the problem. Ignored it in Lenovo update and everything is now working fine.
