T400 - screen flicker intermittently

#1 Post by Oro » Sat Dec 28, 2013 2:17 pm

I have a T400 (Win 7Pro 32). It has started having two pixel lines near the top flash intermittently every few seconds. Random colors, straight horizontal lines. It seems when this happens the rest of the screen momentarily moves up one or two pixel lines, then back down. It's actually not that annoying, but I'm wondering if it indicates an imminent screen failure from some components?

I also had a massive windows download and don't know if it could have altered something? Or it was coincidental.

I would say that based on the past history with screens on the T400, that it is likely that a screen replacement could be in your near future. Luckily, the replacement screens for this model are very inexpensive. There are a few more things to check first:

Do you have integrated Intel graphics only, or do you have dedicated ATI graphics in addition to Intel?

Does the flickering happen less often when the screen is at max brightness?

To verify that the massive windows download isn't the culprit, go to Control Panel > Windows Update > View Windows Update History. The items should be sorted by most recent date/time. Look for anything related to Intel Graphics near the top. If it shows that the Intel Graphics driver was updated recently, you should try rolling back to the previously installed driver to make sure this isn't the cause. If that is all too much trouble, you could download and install the Lenovo recommended display adapter here: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... d558ww.exe

You can try reseating the connectors from the screen to the motherboard to verify that a bad connection isn't the problem.

Have you changed either of the RAM modules recently? Is Vt-D enabled in the BIOS? If so, it could be the MIGR-74739 issue. See the example photos at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-74739
