T30, Intel 845MP chipset and 2 GB of RAM

#1 Post by wolfman » Sat May 14, 2005 11:18 pm

Hello all,

I've read many posts here by folks with T30 and A31 machines that have been able to install 1 GB PC2100 RAM sticks in their machines. Intel says (and IBM too) that the limit of the 845MP chipsets support is 1 gig. So....I have a thinkpad based on this same chipset and am interested in finding out from other T30 owners if any have had issues with using 1 GB RAM sticks in their 845MP based systems - or has it worked for everyone? Any reason to believe that this same motherboard/chipset in an R series would not also support a 1 GB RAM stick?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum - this motherboard/chipset was used across a number of machines and thinkpad lines. Thanks, I want to have a reasonable idea of success before I order (any RAM suggestions? Kingmax, Kingston, Crucial?). This also means that I can potentially swap out my 2.0 gigahertz celeron for a 2.4 gigahertz P4-M processor...:)

Steve

Well, pretty soon I'll be able to post a follow up, I just ordered a 1 gig 200 pin so-dimm to try and install. Seems like there is no good reason why if it will work fine in a i845MP based T30 or A31 or A31p that it will not also work in a i845MP based R40. I'll post results back in case they are interesting to anyone else.

Well, received the RAM today (don't deliveries always come AFTER the long holiday weekend ;) ) and installed with no issues. Machine boots up fine and reports 1.5 gig of RAM. Didn't have the nerve (or a buyer for the second 512 meg stick) so I didn't order two, but should not be an issue.

So anyone out there with an R40 thinkpad based on the i845MP chipset you too can use 1 gig 200 pin so-dimms in your thinkpad like the T30, A31, A31P folks around here. The max is not 1 gig as IBM's literature states it should be 2 gig based on my experience. :)

OK, confirmed that 2 gig of RAM works fine in i845MP chipset based R40 units with a 1 gig max as reported in IBM product literature. I just installed a second 1 gig stick to bring the machine to 2 gig total.
