T60P - No Sound

#1 Post by Onzo » Sun Dec 29, 2013 11:52 am

The sound has stopped working on my T60P. No sound from headphones, external, or the internal speakers. It has the Sound MAX Integrated Digital HD Audio controller.

First, I made sure all my drivers were up to date and when that didn't work, I wiped it clean and re-installed Windows 7. Next, I used Windows Update and Lenovo's Solution Center app to make sure I had the latest updates and drivers but still no luck. Also, Solution Center reported no issues during the Hardware and Device Manager scans.

Do you think the Sound MAX Audio controller is bad? I didn't see it listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual so I am wondering if it is part of the motherboard.

Thanks,

Two things here:

a) Have you played with volume buttons? Sometimes it's as easy as that...

b) Try booting from a "live" Linux CD such as Ubuntu or Mint. if there's no sound there, you have a hardware problem. If it sounds fine, there's a driver issue somewhere within Windows.

And yes, the audio controller in integrated into the motherboard.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I booted from a live Ubuntu DVD, and actually installed it for a dual-boot with Win7, but still no sound. Also, when I press the sound control buttons the increase/decrease/mute graph appears on the screen so I assume they are working.

My young son uses this T60P for Internet, YouTube, and email so I am thinking it will probably be cheaper to find a similar system on ebay rather than having the sound card replaced, if that's even possible. I've already replaced the fan and the hard drive and now the spacebar is sticking :).

Thanks again,

Sound is part of a chipset which is integrated in the motherboard and cannot be replaced/repaired.
If you remove the palmrest, you can see a connector top-left of the RAM modules.
That's the speaker-connector. If somehow loose, that might explain, although it would be very rare...
