First post--Please advise on memory upgrade for W510

#1 Post by Usher99 » Mon Jan 06, 2014 7:17 pm

http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs. ... 2464BF1339

I thought these modules just might work?? Crucial memory advisor says max is 16 GB but I see multiple confirmed reports of my quad core system working with 32 GB. Perhaps this upgrade will speed up very large Photoshop file processing a bit.

Have W510 with i7 820QM(1/73GHz 1066MHz 8MBL3, shipped with 8GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz
SODIMM memory in 2 DIMM. I assume I have 2 open slots with I would guess 0 and 1 with the factory install and 2 slots open?

The max memory of W510 listed as 16GB but same processor on W520 can take 32 GB so I trust this W510 can take up to 32 GB as well? I was thinking of two 8GB modules unless it wiser to replace all 4 and it isn't cost prohibitive.
Don't want to buy the wrong memory. Perhaps will get one of those wrist strap doohickies as our house is dry. This is my first Lenovo memory upgrade. Any comments most appreciated

Welcome to the forum!

I thought the maximum was 4GB per slot for a total of 16GB, but several users report using 32GB.

The i7-820QM was never available for the W520.

Good luck!

Indeed that's interesting. It appears that the memory controller of the quad core CPU on this platform can handle 8GB DIMMs, but the dual core CPUs can only handle 4GB DIMMs.

W510 came equipped with 720QM/820QM/920XM CPU's by default.

They are compatible with 740/840QM CPU's too, 920/940XM CPU's run too hot for the cooling system, even though Lenovo supplied models with 920XM CPU's.

W510 with a quad core CPU supports up to 4x8GB of memory.

Cool! Sounds like buying two 8GB modules more will be fine despite Lenovo not allowing that at purchase (in retrospect probably saved $$) and Crucial not listing them as compatible. I just hope the modules I linked to are OK. Appreciate all the comments. Thanks.

You are correct. I am not sure why you quoted that part of my post, was there a disagreement with what I typed?

Well, it's probably just a typo, you wrote W520 didn't have the 820QM CPU, this is true, but this is in a W510 thread, so I clarified to be sure.

Did a typo get corrected I didn't notice?

It doesn't matter much though, there is no disagreement.
