T540p and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the Lenovo Ultra Doc 402A

#1 Post by azsxdcfv » Tue Jan 07, 2014 4:58 pm

First, I see that the forum is for the T4X series, and this is a T540P, but it's basically a T440p with a larger screen.

The config is the Intel 4700MQ, 16GB RAM, Samsung Pro 512GB SSD, Intel graphics, 2880x1620 screen. Overall, it's a great computer. The touchpad is not my favourite but I will learn to use it.

The OS is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit, with output from uname -a being:
Linux <hostname> 3.11.8-031108-generic #201311122252 SMP Wed Nov 13 03:53:29 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Some glitches out of the box are the hardware keys to control the brightness of the screen that was fixed by modifying /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"

Regrettably, Google Chrome consistently exhibits a video display problem where the rendering of the page is completely scrambled, or the colours are inverted. At first I thought it was caused by my rapidly scrolling with the scroll wheel of the attached mouse, but I was wrong as the page can scramble even while scrolling with PageUp/Down.

I can live with the above. I can't live with the following: I have the Ultra Dock 402A for this computer so that I can get dual displays via the dock. When I dock the computer, Linux doesn't appear to recognize the dock. The screen resolution of the laptop changes to a bizarre 4:3 aspect ratio, and the video is never pushed to the monitors attached to the dock. According to this page, http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Docking_Solutions, it's a known problem. Now, since this OS is running kernel 3.11.xxxxxxx shouldn't the updated thinkpad-acpi driver be in the kernel?

I'm currently using a StarTech MDP2DPDVHD which provides DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort to connect a single monitor and use the single monitor in tandem with the notebook screen.

I really want to use the dock, and this could be enough to push me to install Windows.

Help?

Thanks

I have the T440p with the Ultra Dock.

I also had issues with my external screen via the dock, so I plug my screen directly into the laptop instead (VGA port on left side). Also the audio port on the dock doesn't work for me. BTW, I am also running Ubuntu 12.04.4 on my machine ... kernel 3.11 I believe ...
