R52: What about the fan problem?

#1 Post by thorbenk » Sun May 15, 2005 1:57 pm

Hello,
I'm considering to buy the new R52 (the version with 1,73 Ghz Centrino plus GM900) but I've read repeatedly about the "fan which never goes out again problem" with the previous R51 models.

Can anyone who already owns a R52 comment on if this has been fixed?

How hot does the graphic chipset get? I heard this might be responsible for the fan going on too often in previous models. Can you clock it down (in the BIOS?) ? I really don't need much graphic power, but would prefer a really quiet laptop.

Fan problem

I own a R51 and can tell you from experience about the fan "problem". The fact is that, depending on the temperature of the room and the load of the machine, the fan does come on fairly frequently. BUT, the important thing is, it comes at the slowest speed and is barely audible. Of course, noisier than when it is stopped but hardly unpleasant except for the most sensitive.
I do not consider this a drawback. I must add that I have the display screen which is called a fancy name that I forget, meaning that it can be seen from wide angles.

I must also add that I always use my machine with the brightest screen unless, which is rare, my first priority is battery life. From what I understand, the heat source is the video card. Some have tweaked it I believe but at the cost of display performance.

My advice? Unless silence is your first priority, go ahead.
