Am I getting a good deal on this T43?

#1 Post by koala » Sun May 15, 2005 2:37 pm

I am starting graduate school in August and the school says we should buy the computer from them as a package, it seems like a good deal but I was looking for a reality check since I don't know the ThinkPad that well. They say it is a good price because they are a 'ThinkPad University'

The school offers three choices but I am looking at this one (and maybe adding 512MB more memory):

IBM ThinkPad T43 1871-C1U
- Pentium M 750 1.86 GHz
- Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
- RAM 512 MB
- HD 40 GB
- CD-RW / DVD
- Centrino a/b/g
- 14.1" TFT XGA (1024 x 768)

The package includes IBM ThinkPad Protection, insurance for theft (not covered by the protection plan?), a bunch of software they require, and if it breaks I get a loaner while they fix it. They want $1700 for that. I found this model on the Lenovo site and it said it was $2279 for just the computer?

Sounds good but am I missing something?

Thanks!

Theft is not covered by the insurance plan.

The EDU site lists it at $1,823.20
That's without the TPP

I'd say $1,700 is a pretty good deal.

Thanks.... if that is below list now I am thinking I should consider the upgrade model they offer.

T43 2668C6U
- Pentium M 760 2.0 GHz
- Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
- RAM 1 GB
- HD 80 GB
- DVD+/-RW Multi-Burner +
- Centrino a/b/g
- 14.1" TFT XGA (1400 x 1050)

Same package deal, $2,225.

I could not find the EDU site you mentioned to find a price to compare, what is the URL?

Thank you!
