2GB DDR3 RAM, 4x1GB DDR2 RAM

#1 Post by Rob » Tue Jan 21, 2014 6:35 pm

I have some extra RAM modules hopefully someone can use.

I have 1x2GB Crucial CT25664BC1339.8FD 204-PIN DDR3 SODIMM RAM I used in a Thinkpad x200s before I upgraded to 4GB.
Asking $20+shipping

I have 4x1GB 200-PIN DDR2 SODIMM. 2 of the sticks are Hynix brand, and 2 are Crucial brand.
Asking $5 each+shipping

I also have a 256MB SO-DIMM

I should know this, but what era(s) Thinkpads would these work in?
T42 (type 2373)
T43 (type 2668) x2

The DDR2 ranges from the T43, to the T60, then on to the T61 and their equivalent "R" or "X" Series machines being the R52, R60, R61, and X40/41, X60/61, X300. That would all need to be matched up with the speed of the bus on the particular machine of course.

The DDR3 ranges from the T400/500 to the current models and of course, their equivalent "L", "SL" or "X" Series machines being the L4xx/5xx, and X20x, X301. And of course, they would need to be matched up with the bus speed as well.

That's very general of course, but hope it helps.

X40 uses PC2100 or PC2700 ordinary DDR RAM.
X41 and up uses DDR2.

I believe the SL400 and SL500 use DDR2 PC2-5300. These don't follow the thinkpad line exactly because they are based on Ideapads rather than on the thinkpad line. Some of the SL400 and SL500 models use the same CPU chips as the T400/500 line, but still use the older ram. Some of them have 667mhz FSB cpu chips, some have 800mhz, and some have 1066mhz. What I'm unsure about is if there are different boards for each bus speed or if the FSB speed is user selectable. These aren't bad machines and I've had a couple over the years, but I think it was deceptive for lenovo to call them thinkpads because they aren't compatible with a lot of thinkpad parts, don't have ultrabay, and if you ever worked on one you'll know they weren't designed by thinkpad engineers, but I'm going off topic.

Good luck with your sale

ok, I'll re-phrase my question. Do those 1GB DD2 chips work in a T43? The HMM states that model uses:

DDR2-533 SDRAM SO-DIMM (PC2-4200)
T42 (type 2373)
T43 (type 2668) x2
T60 (type 2007)

His listing doesn't state what speed they are, but it shouldn't matter. When your machine was manufactured DDR2 was new and 533mhz (PC2-4200) was the common speed. Later it became 667mhz (PC2-5300) which when used in your laptop will run at the lower speed. I've done this many times and never had a problem but I would ask the seller his return policy if they don't work. I'm sure they will, but it's better to ask first. The pc2-4200 isn't very common, but the pc2-5300 has more applications so if you ever wanted to sell it, or use it in a different laptop it would be of more value. You definitely don't want to run ram that is slower than the recommended speed, but 99.9% of the time there is no problem running faster ram.
