A31 Screen Replacement

#1 Post by luke4010 » Mon Jan 27, 2014 11:45 am

Hi All,

Recently, I acquired another Thinkpad A31 at a flea market for a whopping sum of $5. It had a sticky note that read "BAD SCREEN" on it, but for $5, why pass it up. When I brought it home and plugged it in, the screen was cracked so much that it couldn't display anything. Plugging an external monitor into it did work, so I am looking for a new screen. It had the 15" SXGA screen in it, and all the ones on Ebay are in the $35+ range. Since I don't want to spend that much on it, I wanted to know, would a Thinkpad G40/G41 15" SXGA screen work? I found one on Ebay that looks exact for only $15, but I don't want to buy it unless I know it fits. (Link at bottom of post) Would anybody know if it would?

I can't give a definitive answer, but can point you towards some hints: take a look at http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display
Of course, the list is not full (anyone can make an account to help filling info in), but it seems the A30 and the G40/41 share a Samsung common SXGA+ screen but not the Hitachi one. You could try and compare the A31 and G40/41 HMMs regarding LCD FRUs. Good luck

What's the full model number of that A31, located on the same sticker that holds the serial number and the production date on the bottom of the laptop?

Should be something like 265*-***

It is a 2653-CU1, same as my other A31. Im guessing it had the screen replaced and upgraded at some point, as Lenovo says it should have a 14.1' XGA in it, but it does have the SXGA cable in it.
Thanks,
Luke

That doesn't make any sense.

14" SXGA+ was not an option on a 14" A3x series.

What's the FRU # on the cable?

Sorry, my bad. It has the 15" SXGA+ in it, so I'm guessing at some point, somebody upgraded the screen on it from a 14" XGA to a 15" SXGA+. It also has the 15" bezel on it too.
Thanks,
Luke

I see.

Well, now you can wait for that screen to be re-listed, since it will work in that modded A31 of yours/
