Disabling Intel PXE network boot (or whatever it is)

#1 Post by Lockheed » Tue Jan 28, 2014 9:49 am

On my W500, each time I boot, after seeing the ThinkPad POST logo, I see the Intel network boot process checking its own thing (at least that's what I think it is).
Every now and again, boot will stall at this stage and wait like that for 10-15 seconds, displaying nothing but a blinking "_" and only then proceeding to system bootloader.

I believe this is because of that Intel boot component. Is there any way to disable that? There is nothing in BIOS to disable PXE boot, and I read on Lenovo website that for some ThinkPads pressing Ctrl+P on that Intel screen enables one to enter directly into its setup and disable it there, but it didn't work on my laptop.

Try this, you might get lucky.
Press F1 at boot time to go into BIOS.
Once there, select Startup/Boot/PCI LAN and press the X-key to exclude it from boot-sequence.
Never tried it, but it would make sense...
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for the idea, but I already have it excluded.

I have no idea if that will work, but try
Press Ctrl+S immediately after the initialization message appears.

Disable the LAN boot ROM too (should be there somewhere).

Ctrl+S doesn't do anything, and Lan boot is disabled.

Another shot in the dark - Is Manageability (Intel AMT) disabled as well?
