Move T8100 CPU (from T61) to Asus laptop, now using T6500?

#1 Post by vm5 » Fri Jan 31, 2014 5:28 pm

I changed, following the discussions here, the t8100 with a t9300 on my t61 finding better performances and the cpu seems also run with lower temperature. Another score for the forum.

Now I'm wondering about the possibility to put the old t8100 on an Asus laptop that is using a t6500. I saw that there isn't a great difference in performances but the t8100 has more the virtualization support that could be good for my use.

Generally speaking should it be possible? I know that isn't a Lenovo but i was only trying to understand if the possible compatibility depends on the socket or other issues that i don't know.

Moderator edit: Changed thread-title into something a bit better descriptive (compared to "Perhaps I'm OT").

Google finds the following:

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core2-Duo ... -Duo-T6500
http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/610/In ... 3M%29.html
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardwar ... guide.html

It appears that both are available in Socket P configurations and the core voltages are the same. You should also double-check the Asus' chipset to see if it supports the T8100 (consult the notebookreview.com site referenced above and/or wait for somebody else more knowledgeable about CPU swaps than I :) ).

I tried the change but It wasn't a good idea. The computer become lazy rather than faster. I came back to the original CPU but i didn't understand the deterioration of the performances.

It's interesting that it ran at all. Apparently, someone tried an opposite swap once, and it completely failed to work:

This is new for me; i was thinking that was necessary only to respect the socket type and that the greater id number indicated better performances.....

I'm not surprised that it works. The T8100 was released before the T6500 and they're both Penryn CPUs, so BIOS and platform support for the T8100 is all but guaranteed for laptops that have the T6500.

I don't know why the T8100's performance is lackluster though...
