#1 Post by CHANN3X » Fri Jan 31, 2014 7:57 pm

Hi Guys,

Just got a new X200 about 2 months ago and am wondering what average temps you are getting with your x200 as my Fan seems to kick in a lot and want to see if its time to get the AS5 out "My X60 didnt seem as noisy but I may be imagining it"

Thanks

Here are my current temps all on Power source optimized powerplan

Your temps seem pretty normal to me. Take into consideration that your average X200 (non-tablet) uses a full-voltage mobile CPU and is housed in a compact enclosure. How do you suppose the laws of thermodynamics apply here? The heat being released from the system is quite great in proportionality to the full-voltage mobile CPU. If the heat continues to bother you then you could try a couple of things to see if they are beneficial while ruling out possible culprits.

First have you cleaned the fan blades and exhaust area with some compressed air? If not then my suggestion is to remove the (5) or (6) screws that allow you to remove the keyboard for a birds-eye view of the motherboard and fan. Now discharge any static electricity that you might have accumulated on yourself by touching a metal object. Static electricity has the potential to be quite lethal for the motherboard. Now hold the fan blades stationary while you use the compressed air. Letting the fan blades spin freely is a bad idea. Do not let the fan blades spin freely from compressed air! I usually use a plastic item to hold the blades or a screwdriver. If your fan blades are clean give your system a run again. If it still does not satisfy your liking as far as temps go you might want to apply a new application of thermal compound. Considering the X200 is compact the thermal compound procedure will require you to extract the motherboard as the fan is on the opposite side that you see when you remove the keyboard. The first time I did this with an X200 it took ~1.5 hours. It was much easier the 2nd time as I became familiar with the procedure. Please download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your X200. It is a wonderful PDF to have handy- period! I do not have the X200 with me right now to test for temps. It is being used by my younger brother and as the family HTPC. If you have any more questions please ask here. Right now emeraldgirl08 needs some sustenance and more importantly COFFEE. Going to peel myself out of bed and make the trip to the grocery store for some coffee (ran out yesterday).

Good luck :)

Thanks for the reply Im pretty familiar with ThinkPad hardware just check my sig I have only ever had thinkpad laptops. Its just good to hear the temps of other users of the same HW to get a rough idea. I cannot remember the temps on my X60 but it just seemed quieter (the fans seemed to kick in less) but as there were about 3 months between my 2 year old busting it and getting this I may just be remembering differently. I will blow the fans out though but I am happy with your answer.

P.S
You must always have a supply of coffee I live off the stuff I think I have it for blood!! Enjoy!!

Cheers once again
