FS T61 Intel GPU SXGA 42W7648 MB Penryn Barebones System $79

#1 Post by tombaker » Tue Feb 04, 2014 6:10 pm

Hi this can either be considered a barebones system, 8895-A98
or a very rare motherboard with accessories. 42W7648 Intel Graphics 14.1 4:3 SXGA form factor.

Price is essentially 79+20 Shipping via Paypal. Its $99 delivered via USPS.

It's the 42W7648 motherboard, which does NOT have the problem Nvidia issues. From my understanding this is a Penryn compatible motherboard, when installed with a Middleton BIOS, which enables SATA II also. Search 42W7648 MB for questions on what the MB can do.

If someone wanted just the motherboard, and someone wanted all the other stuff. I could probably split them up. Trying to not part it out though.

What it is.
T61 14.1 SXGA+ 1400 x 1050 barebones, with everything except (no hard drive, no DRAM, no AC adapter, No battery)

Otherwise complete laptop. with wireless, finger print reader, good screen, with a few rubs against keyboard scuffs, which you only see when the screen is off, but otherwise a nice SXGA display. Hinges have some play, but, not bad, my T60 has worse. Keyboard will have some shinny keys Vista Business COA intact. Working DVD-ROM

It will include the harddrive tray, screws, rubber bumpers, and hardrive cover plastics.

Just so it's clear, this is NOT a Penryn board... though as the seller mentions, Middleton's BIOS will enable the use of a Penryn chip in this board. There is some debate on whether this is a good idea... I can tell you that I am running a T9300 Penryn chip in a 42W7648 without issue... still I think it's slightly disingenuous of the seller to specifically advertise it as a Penryn board... but good price all considered!

A matching T61 14.1" 4:3 native PENRYN motherboard with Intel Gfx would have P/N 42W7872
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Having both 7648/7872 with Penryns inside - working like a charm, no issues. 42W7648 Middletons BIOS applied.
T40 and T43 on bookshelf, t61 sxga+ x3100 + T8100 (Mum), t61 sxga+ x3100 t9300 and t420s i5 (mine toys :D), R500 P8400 (sister)

I put down it was Penryn compatible, with the Middleton BIOS, which I researched prior to posting, and as you say you are running a Penryn without issue. So as far as form and function it handles the Penryn. I read some posts saying that it was the same board, as the later version, which was confusing to me, but the end result was it would run a Penryn, and that was from what appeared to be a very authoritive poster.

The key with this set of hardware offered, is it has the Intel GPU, not the Nvidia which some say is guaranteed to fail. It has the hardware and screen to run at 1400 x 1050.

To make sure there was no confusion, I put the serial and model number, and copied the hardware bill of materials form Lenovo. So at a very good price, I think I have done a very good job at describing what is for sale, and with the middleton Bios, it can handle 64 bits, and Sata 2, and 8GB genuinely.

That said, I am just using the information from other threads,
and this has always been a stock system, with a 7300 installed and included. For me, I use 32bits so I can run a Kensington Trackball on windows 7 with all the original Mouseworks functionality.

This item being offered is identified specifically as 42W7648, with Penryn compatibility via the Middleton BIOS, with Intel Gfx etc. Any reasons to want a bone stock native Penryn that overcomes a 4 times the price. Does not the Middleton BIOS make it Native, after the fact, in fact?

Can I drop this MB into my T60 Flexview, as a straight drop in, not worrying about any connectors or anything else??? Will it fit exactly, as a straight motherboard swap. 14.1 T61 MB into a T60 15 inch??? I am pretty good with a screwdriver, but sometime can "over fix" things and break them, if I have to do modifications to get them to work.

(I will be searching the threads for that next....but if you know for sure without question then TIA)

Tom, the 42w7648 is a Merom only board. You can run a Penryn chip in it but with a factory bios it will display a thermal sensing error because the board cannot read the Penryn chips more advanced digital temp sensor. The middleton bios doesn't add this ability, it only suppresses the warning. Performance wise they are equal, but it's not a native penryn board.

In order to use the board in a 15" T60 you'll have to do some modifications to your frame.

ps. Your price is very good and I considered buying it myself since I source a lot of these boards, but when I get mine I have the opportunity to open the unit up and inspect for things like liquid damage as well as running tests on the board which is why I avoid buying at auction. I'd also buy it for the screen alone but most of my buyers want a screen without any contact marks and I already have quite a few with extremely minor blemishes. It's still a great deal judging by your description and is less than I normally pay and I'm sure someone here will snatch it up, but it would perhaps be best to list it as a Merom board modded with middleton bios to assure a novice buyer isn't misinformed as to what they are buying.

Pretty much everyone is gonna want the middleton BIOS for SATA II, which is similarly not native inside the OEM BIOS. Performance is the goal

The Intel Graphics is far more rare, and this one has all the hardware for 1400 x 1050.

I missed a previous PM on interest, as I was not checking back here for a while.
I don't really want to part out the machine......so its still as a whole.
