Why can't I swap out T60 SSD's between "identical" machines?
Why can't I swap out T60 SSD's between "identical" machines?
I own/maintain 10+ T60s all of the same machine type (2007-72U) and OS (Win 7 Pro). In the past whenever one of the T60s would fail I would just swap the HD over to a spare T60. This process worked well for me for years. I have recently started to replace some T60 HDs with SSDs all of the same type (Intel 330 120GB) but have not able to successfully swap the SSDs between T60s with getting a BSOD.
A couple questions:
- should this be possible?
- has anyone had any success swapping SSDs between T60s of the same machine type?
- any recommendations?
TIA. Regards.

Re: QUES: why can't I swap out T60 SSDs between machines?
IMHO all you need to do is change the Config/SATA setting in the BIOS of the new machine to the same as the machine it came out of.
That's either AHCI or Compatibilty.

Re: QUES: why can't I swap out T60 SSDs between machines?
I'm not sure if this is relevant for your problem, but two things just crossed my mind:
1) Do all T60's have the same version BIOS and EC?
2) Is the BIOS-settings the same in all T60's?
Reason for asking the latter us that I just came to think of the (in-!) famous "Boot Agent and PXE-E05 errors" which sometime have troubled T60'ers...
BTW, are you sure that that the OS (Windows 7) is truly and fully happy with being moved to a new laptop? (licensing issues?).
Good luck fixing this!

Re: QUES: why can't I swap out T60 SSDs between machines?
I've had quite a bit of luck with moving drives and even SSDs on the T6x series. The main thing I've had to watch for was to make sure that I dumped the graphics device when I was switched between an nVidia and Intel graphics units. I also had to make sure that the units' settings for AHCI were the same.
Never had a bit of trouble, even put a SSD from a X300 into an X61 without a reload, then I tried to swap my wife's SSD from her T61 into a T500. Repeated bluescreens. Ended up having to do a reload. Never did figure out the issue.

Re: Why can't I swap out T60 SSD's between "identical" machi
just to reiterate, ACHI and BIOS and if they are exactly the same you should have no problems.
I've done it imaging a HD onto an SSD with no problems, except for mounting it properly with a 1mb space for proper partition alignment.

I had the same problem. Tried booting the SSD in the ultrabay. Worked. Updated everything. Then booted SSD in drive bay. Worked. (No, I don't understand).
