Anyone using Mozilla Firefox as a substitute for Internet Explorer?

Wouldn't mind some feed back one impressions.

it's so much faster than ie. and it's less bloated. it has an integrated pop-up blocker, and a search bar already in it.

please, do yourself the favor and make the switch.

Yes I (as well as my friends and colleagues) do use Mozilla Firefox... instead of Internet explorer!? What is Internet explorer? Do you mean that browser-like program that opens when you click "windows update"? Never though that somebody uses it to browse the web also...(lol)

I am using Firefox, too. It's a very nice browser, although the 0.9 version dosn't look as nice as the old one. The only problem is, that IBM can't detect my system (T41) with Firefox. Therefor I am still using IE when visiting the IBM page.

I am using Firefox as well.

But there are certain sites whereby IE is an absolute must. I encountered it once when visiting a site that provides web-based training.

I'm been using Mozilla 1.x (now 1.7) for at least the past year. It's rock solid so I'll wait for Firefox 1.0 to come out before switching.

In any case, features like tabbed browsing, bookmark, cookie, pop-up, password and image management et al are miles ahead of M$.

As others have noted, expect to use IE at certain sites whose web developers have been assimilated by Redmond. (IBM's ThinkPad model detection and M$'s Windows Update are two notables.)

Wow! I went ahead and installed it. Great browser. I can manually download the Windows updates. Just wish there was some way to uninstall IE. Anyway, I was prompted to check it out by this article:

I learn now that the XP SP2 due later this summer will make some improvements to IE. Check out this (look under the heading Internet Explorer):

Hmmm... FireFox!! I use it to and have convinced everyone (some not so willingly) to switch to. A day or two later, and everyone (even the non-tech savvy) have fallen in love with it. It also keeps me from listening to them complaing abou all the spyware and popup problems that come along with IE (I don't know how many times I've had to tell people "When the popup ad say 'click here'; Don't!")

Just install Qute theme and 0.9 will look same as 0.8

Firefox rocks for general browsing although you still need IE for Windows
Updates and IBM model detection on the IBM site. I don't mind the 0.9
theme but I think the newly released 0.9.1 uses the old Qute theme (you
can easily install the 0.8 Qute theme as a previous poster has noted).

You can speed up Firefox tremendously by enabling pipelining in the config
screen (type "about:config" in the address bar (w/o the quotes)). Set the
following variables as below and new pages load almost instantly:

network.http.max-requests 32
network.http.pipelining true
network.http.pipelining.firstrequest true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests 24
network.http.proxy.pipelining true
nglayout.intitiapaint.delay 0

Some users have reported some minor layout problems with this config,
e.g., slashdot.org center column text slightly overlays the left column. You
can workaround this minor problem by hitting CTRL+ followed by CTRL-
As always, YMMV.

I really like the tabbed browsing because it saves so much screen real
estate and popup blocking should be built in to all browsers IMHO. MS is
only now talking about restarting IE development (they quit as soon as
they killed Netscape) and with all the IE security issues I'd drop it in a
heartbeat if my main support sites didn't require it.

i migrated from firefox to mozilla.. found just a little more stable -- less quirks. i'll definitely get firefox again when it's out of beta.

I also use Firefox as my primary browser, its faster and blocks the majority of popups. Less security issues too.

Firefox/Mozilla users,
Do not forget to update Firefox to version 0.9.2 or apply patch from Mozilla web site. There were security holes identified in Firefox (and Mozilla) recently.

Don't forget to check out the various extensions available for firefox. I don't know what I'd do without the mouse gestures extension or the adblock extension. The IE view extension also comes in handy when you come across the occasional page that doesn't look right in firefox.

Wanted to add two thoughts here, one is the Google toolbar extension, It works just like the IE version:

And the second is a comment on "... IBM can't detect my system ... with Firefox...". There are extensions that make Firefox look (to a webserver) like an IE browser. I've read they work on banking sites, and such. I haven't tried it, but I suspect they will work for IBM's detection applet. One in particular is User Agent Switcher, at http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/mo ... figuration

Note that you can also get these by Tools > Extensions > Get More Extensions,

I tried the User Agent extension.
It doesn't seem to work. I tried setting it to IE, Navigator, and Opera with no luck. I tried many times, at different ibm pages, closing all browser windows first, etc ..

I'm more interested in getting the scrolling to work in a dropdown menu, though.

keep in mind, compared to other browsers Firefox is still in ints infancy, its come a VERY long way since it began, the scrolling has been a known issue and it will be fixed in the 1.0 Release which is expected in August

I'm not so sure that the trackpoint scroll will be fixed (since it seems to work everywhere but one type of form element).
I've been trying to find info on it, but there is not a heck of a lot.

I cant find everything I've read, but here is the old bug report about the tp scroll:

But, that was when the scroll didnt work at all (I think?). It now works everywhere except in a form option/select dropdown menu that is long enough to require scrolling.
As far as I've seen, it works everywhere else.

I was under the impression that it was new ibm trackpoint drivers that have caused the scroll to work in firefox, and not any "fix" to firefox.

This is a very minor issue to me, but I dislike having something that doesnt work 100% - I just like to fix things.

I am extremely happy with mozilla/firefox, I just wish I was smart enough to have switched earlier.
You would now have to pay me to use IE for general web browsing.
