Please Help, the noise is killing me.

Hello Mates.

Two days ago I received my first ever laptop - Thinkpad W510 4389, i7-720QM,4GB DDR2 SO-DIMM SDRAM,9c Li-Ion+ 135W adapter.

Today I have installed Win7 Ultimate X64,together with all drivers + Bios update to 1.45 via Boot CD,because the original Win7 Pro was in German.

Now doing nothing but browsing on the machine I hear this awful noise coming from underneath.

I did record it here twice https://soundcloud.com/mytable-tennis

Now as I don`t consider myself enough PC fluent I`m asking for some help identifying this problem together with some tips about setting up the BIOS,Power manager etc.

Kind regards.

Congrats on a good laptop as your first one. Sounds like something is nicking the fan blades. You need to disassemble the laptop and remove the offending item. At worse you may have to replace the fan but I doubt it. If you bought this from a retail store, they might offer a warranty and do this free for you. If you have to do it yourself, while you are at it, I'd take the opportunity to clean take apart the heatsink fan assembly and reapply thermal paste. You will have to do some googling and research in order to do this properly.

Having said that, it's not that difficult, will not take that long to do, and is not beyond your capabilities besides needing some patience and a willingness to research and learn. None of us were born PC fluent. We were all born knowing nothing and some of us know less as the years have gone by. But most of us have managed to learn what we need to. First start by downloading the maintenance manual from Lenovo's website. It will show you step by step how to disassemble and put everything back.

No special tips for setting up BIOS beyond your own personal preference. Beyond using power manager for battery info, I don't change any of settings myself.

Get the HMM (manual) here: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... 536_05.pdf
To me it sounds either like there's a blade broken off or the fan is hitting the antenna wire(s) near it.
If the latter, you only need to remove the palmrest first, then the keyboard.
You'll see the fan in the top left corner.
If you need to take the fan out, you'll also need to remove the keyboard bezel (around the top and sides of the keyboard).
Instructions for replacing thermal paste: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth ... d_v1.1.pdf
