X220 magnet location in palmrest

#1 Post by harpsichord3626 » Wed Mar 05, 2014 3:46 am

Hi,

Does anyone where the magnet is located in the palmrest on a X220?

My secondhand laptop does not sleep when the lid is closed however if I run a magnet by the top of the screen by the webcam the laptop does go to sleep, as a result I suspect the magnet is missing in the palmrest. Pictures would help greatly.

Thanks!

Based on the location of the trigger-magnet (next to the webcam), its counterpart must be under the touchpad, near the front of the laptop.

To see the trigger-magnet in the lid's LCD-bezel, look at picture 2 here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-NEW-IBM-LEN ... 0783053733
Small rectangular immediately above the left round webcam hole on the inside of the LCD-bezel.

Mark your LCD-bezel with the magnet's location (using e.g. a Post-It note), then close the laptop, and mark its opposite position on your palmrest.
Can't find any pictures showing the palmrest receiver/magnet/whatever.

I think the magnet is adjacent to the screw that secures the palm rest that is to the left of centre when looking at the laptop from underneath (based on the fact that that it's harder to remove than the one to the left due to magnetic force exerted on it when trying to remove).

Thanks for the replies folks, time to crack it open and see if there's anything in there... if not I'll stick a little magnet in myself to see if that works.

Quick update, I found that there was a magnet missing from inside my X220, it was actually meant to be in the speaker housing as there is a small recess in there for one. I purchased a small magnet from eBay and glued it in. Laptop now sleeps and wakes when lid opened and closed!

Good to know. Time to open up my W520 to remove that magnet. I hate it that the machine wakes up when I open the lid. Especially because I sometimes use my Thinkpad to transport precious paper.

You can change what happens when you open the lid in windows power settings, or in the lenovo power manager to save you cracking it open!

Not really. That settings is "Change what closing the lid does". And both are already set to "Do Nothing". However; seemingly random it sometimes does wake when I open the lid.
