#1 Post by Antiapplekid » Wed Mar 05, 2014 11:30 am

Well yesterday my T60P machine got dew exploded all over it long story short it's hanging on it's last leg. I'm currently looking for a new used thinkpad and looking for suggestions I am a system admin so I like the 14" screen because of it being lightweight and I need at least upgradable to 8 GB of ram any suggestions what model I should be looking at ect sorry if this is the wrong place to post this just looking for some suggestions

Well, if you want to hang on to the 4:3 format, a T61 is the only choice left.

Should a widescreen machine be an option, a T410 is a very solid piece of engineering that can be had for a song nowadays.

Anything from T61 upwards can take 8GB RAM or more, depending on model.
Do you need integrated or discrete graphics?
T61 with anything other than Intel integrated graphics can be dangerous.
Read the T6x forum about (discrete) nVidia problems in the T61 series.
Currently your best bet would be a T400 or T410 (both 14.1" widescreen in 16:10 format).
Don't go for the T410s, it needs rare/expensive 1.8" hard drives or SSDs.
Another option: X301 which has a 13.3" screen, and is also MUCH lighter than the T4xx models.
Describe please what you want to do on that laptop, so we can advise you better.

Indeed.

As a point of reference, both X301 and T400s (not the standard T400) use 1.8" drives as well, and should be evaluated carefully prior to purchase if no drive is present for the reasons RBS already stated.

I would prefer something that has dedicated graphics, I apologize about that I want something that I can bring to work and do remote desktops run programs no problem I currently have a T7600 2.33 Ghz and it's fast but I would like a I5 I tend to demand allot out of my laptop but I also have my Built computer for at home I run my own computer company and not a requirement to be able to do some virtulization

Well, then a T410 with NVS3100M is the lowest common denominator, or you could move up to T420 which would bring you to 16:9 screen ratio instead of 16:10 on the T410.

T420 would also allow for a 16GB of RAM as opposed to 8GB on T410.

You know your priorities and budget, but these are the most obvious choices IMO.
