First hiccup in my T61 build. Hard drive size! Doh!
First hiccup in my T61 build. Hard drive size! Doh!
I ordered a Western Digital Scorpio Blue hard drive a week ago to fit in the ultrabay adapter.
Got it today....too thick!!! I'm so frustrated!
Can you guys tell me what size or type of drive I need to get to fit in the drive bay.
It fits in the adapter fine, but it's about 2mm too thick out of the top and hits the case going in.
I'd be willing to trade this one with some one for the right size. Mine is one Terabyte, would like to get the same size but will settle for a 750G.

The 1TB WD Blue drives have a 9.5mm height, you need a 7mm drive for the Ultrabay.

I might be able to help you out- I have a roommate who needs a 1TB Hard Drive to go in his bigger laptop that can fit it. I'll PM you or something if he finds something you might want, or if he can just straight up buy it.

There is something VERY wrong with this picture.
I've been running 9.5mm drives in ultrabay carriers for YEARS now without a problem.

Does an empty Ultrabay adapter fit in the bay?
If you have the HD in a caddy, remove the caddy.
Check that there is nothing between HD and Ultrabay-adapter bottom.
What exact Ultrabay adapter did you buy, the wrong one?
You need an Ultrabay Slim, which will fit in all T4x, T6x and Z6x laptops.

Please answer my questions.
Something is wrong here!
All Ultrabay Slim adapters take 9.5mm high HDs or SSDs.
You call your machine a T61 build, is this a Frankenpad of some sort?

The only thing I can think off is that you got the wrong HD-adapter.
Please measure and tell us its height and tell us if it fits (empty) in your Ultrabay.

It definitely fits in the bay with no problem. With the HD in it, the HD sits high about 2 mm.
Is there a specific tray to use with a 9mm HD? If so, could you provide a link kindly? I feel like I'm missing something here....

Slide the drive in the caddy, secure it with the plastic strip in the back, done.

Re: First hiccup in my T61 build. Hard drive size! Doh!
I'm guessing you still have the HDD caddy attached to the HDD. Remove the HDD caddy, put the bare, naked, birthday suit HDD into the Ultrabay caddy and try again. The only other possibility is that they sent you the wrong Ultrabay caddy.
Re: First hiccup in my T61 build. Hard drive size! Doh!
OK. Quick update.
Got home and reinserted the HD into the caddy.
It slid in easily until it tapped the metal top case of the HD.
With a little effort, a little too much I personally think, it pushed up on the inner frame ever so slightly and slid in. no where near as easy as the easy slide in DVD player.
Pushed it all the way in and it works. Formatted it and it seems to be fine.
I really don't like how tight it went in though. but it's in.

Are there any screws sticking out in the bottom of the HD? There shouldn't be.
Any layer of carton or other material (other than plastic foil) between HD and adapter-bottom?
Did you remove the HD-caddy?

Re: First hiccup in my T61 build. Hard drive size! Doh!
That first pic don't look right. My 9.5mm drives are flush with the top of the Ultrabay caddy. If it's that tight, my concern is heat dissapation of the drive. Heat is the biggest killers of these drives and the Ultrabay was never design for a HDD use.

Perhaps contact with the frames metal may act as a heat sink and help dissipate heat? (It's a stretch, but you can't blame me for trying)

If it weren't for the metal cover of the hd it would be golden, but as you see that's what sticks up.
Taking the metal pan off the bottom of the caddy does nothing either.

Hah!The picture shows a Wester Digital WD10TPVT; that's a 12.5mm drive
I have that same exact 1TB HDD in my Clevo, paired in the double-caddy(two drives one right on top of the other) with my SSD for cooling purposes. Putting two HDDs in that caddy... would be idiotic.
I had to put it in that caddy, it's too thick for the third HDD bay beneath the battery bay, and it also couldn't go in the bottom-most HDD slot for the double caddy, because the HDD door wouldn't shut. It had to go on the topmost one, directly beneath the touchpad. In fact, it contacts the plastic between the first/second HDD bay and the touchpad assembly. That is the ONLY place it will fit in the Clevo, and the ONLY application I could find for it. It doesn't fit in any of my W700's HDD bays, it doesn't fit in the main HDD bay of my Frankenpad(just a T60p at the time) and it can't go in my Serial Ultrabay Slim, because it pokes up like it does in the pictures the OP showed. Maybe it can go in the Serial Ultrabay full-size, for W700 and W510 and newer... but I don't have one to try. Plus, it's an entire procedure to fish my 1TB HDD out of my Clevo... so no thanks.
Yes... get yourself another drive. That drive is too thick for most regular applications... you can try and make it work, but you'll probably break something trying. On the upside, that HDD is supposed to be incredibly reliable.
Okay- wait up:
This quote is actually from a Newegg review, the first one to pop up, when I googled the HDD. So yes, turns out it does work in the FULL SIZED UltraBay Serial, as I had guessed.Using this in Thinkpad W520 in the UltraBay. Works great for storage.

Only because the design of the bay on W510/20/30 is meant to accommodate this height...not so with previous models...Medessec wrote: Okay- wait up:This quote is actually from a Newegg review, the first one to pop up, when I googled the HDD. Re: First hiccup in my T61 build. Hard drive size! Doh!
Well, here's the outcome.
It is indeed a 12.5 mm drive. Being a rookie at this, I just didn't notice this.
After removing it from the T61 again and contemplating the situation, I actually came up with a simple fix.
HD goes in the caddy, but before the caddy goes into the slot, all I had to do was turn back the screw underneath (the one right next to the other hd face plate, you know which one I mean?) 1 full rotation.
Turning that one screw one single rotation to loosen it actually opened up the case and frame enough to allow it to slide in and out perfectly....no modifications.
Just FYI....
