How interesting.
Use some kind of temperature monitor, just to be sure the disk does not get too hot.

It should be fine. Mine doesn't get hot- I monitored mine closely when I first installed it since it's packed against the plastic under the touchpad (as mentioned in my previous post).
You'll like the drive. Just make sure nothing gets goofed up or caught when you install the drive, although it sounds like you've got it just fine.

Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

You can use SpeedFan:
http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
They have Temperature sensors for all major components, but TPFC is mostly accurate with Thinkpads: http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/donate.html
SpeedFan also shows S.M.A.R.T. sensor data, which can help you identify the health of your Hard Drive. If SpeedFan picks it up as unhealthy(Fitness or Reliability is at 0%) then you should return the drive. Possibly test it using WDC tools or something.

Be careful with Thinkpad Fan Control if you also use the Lenovo Power Manager or the Lenovo Power Driver; it might frequently and unprovoked put your system into sleep / hibernation.
It has not so much to do with newer Thinkpads being build to accomodate 12.5mm drives in the Ultrabay: even in the days of the T61 there was the fatter R61 that had a much thicker Ultrabay. The T61 was just the slimline model at the time.
I wouldn't use it if it doesn't fit. Turning one screw loose: nah; wouldn't do that either. Since I replaced my T61's mainboard I'm short one screw, but I wouldn't "enlarge" the bay.
Newer 2-platter 2.5" 1-TB drives also run cooler and faster.
