X61 Tablet Max Memory?

#1 Post by metalmayhem420me1 » Thu Mar 13, 2014 3:37 am

I have been reading the forums for a while now since getting my X60 tablet that the screen died and I now have a x61 tablet. it is model number 7762-C54 . I have read in different places, some say the max is 4GB and others say 8GB. Currently I am running with 3GB and would like to upgrade the memory but I would like to know definitively how much i can upgrade it to. Is there any certain type to get? What is the best speed of ram to get?

According to this page, the max is 4 GB:

Maximum supported RAM by this generation is 8GB, Lenovo mentions 4GB only since at the time the specs were published there were only 2GB sticks available, making it 2x 2GB the maximum memory.

There are now 4GB modules available. Problem is: they're insanely expensive! (See this example here)

You can use DDR2-667 or DDR2-800 RAM, the latter will "downgrade" to 667 speeds.

Happy hunting!

Thank you, that would explain the 4gb 8gb mixed results I have seen in different forums. Thank you for confirming that.

Is there any gotcha's that have come up on here? Like to do with memory timings with the 8Gb of ram and the X61's?

That will make little difference outside of the benchmarks. The important part is to get more memory if you need it. My X220 came with 8GB, but most users including myself, would do fine with 4GB.

Recommended RAM: Hynix, Elpida, G.Skill, Mushkin, Crucial, Axiom, Samsung.
Stay away from so-called ValueRAM (such as from Kingston) as well as the cheapo junk from eBay.
Middleton's BIOS has also been applied umpteen times on X61/X61T.

Running with 6GB here, if you search around I think you'll find people with 8GB installed. The X61T utilises the same innards as the X61s IIRC, so you may try that as well.

Cheers.

@RBS: What's the problem with ValueRAM? Just want to know cause I might like to avoid it in future if...

ValueRam uses second- or third-choice (i.e. borderline good/bad) RAM chips, that only perform at the barest of bare minimum requirements for such chips/modules.
Individually they could contain e.g. faulty/untested 256MB chips that are only good for real-life 128MB.
Doing anything out of what Joe-in-the-street would normally do, might also blow the leftover 128MB.
Maybe their factory tests are either perfunctory or only 1 in 10 gets tested, who knows?
And there have been numerous ValueRam problems mentioned on this and other forums.
No way would I use them!
