false start X60T -X60

#1 Post by aldimeola81 » Thu Mar 13, 2014 8:26 am

the series thinkpad x60t I never understood

the motherboard fail to boot by pressing the power button, turns on the fan and the power led but does not start anything.

if few months later i retry, sometimes the motherboard start to works again for another 6 months

I have 6 motherboards with this same problem, what happens? There is no way to figure out if it is a component unsoldered or what?

yesterday i've found one working motherboard, today it doesn't work

another thing that makes me crazy: the touch is not working at all, I changed the cable, panel, circuit connection, I have 3 LCD panels complete but nothing to do.

I have to throw it all away or is there a solution?

thanks

1. Have you tried turning on the laptop without the RAM? If it gives the 1-3-3-1 error beep, then it means that the board might still be OK, but the RAM might be flaky.

2. Have you cleaned the heatsink and applied new thermal paste?

I encountered similar symptoms with a different laptop (Asus A8e with same intel 945 chipset as the X60) and upon inspection noticed that the thermal paste had dried up completely (like caked mud).
Once I cleaned it and put new paste, it started up without problem. :O

You got to be the most unlucky person in the world when it comes to X60 then. Six motherboards, all experiencing exactly the same (rare) symptom? :eek

Perhaps you should drop by a casino. Your bad luck is bound to even out and you might win millions! :D

The 6 cards that I have been replaced to my clients, however, the defect is not uncommon, and I think depends on the cpu that is detached from the motherboard because of the flexing of the chassis

If your assumption is indeed correct, then the only way to fix this without replacing the whole thing would be to reflow/reball the CPU. With that said, I've never heard of it being done, and it certainly does not seem to be a widespread problem with this model. Otherwise, we would have been hearing about it a lot on these forums, as we do about the T4x GPU/southbridge detachment issue, or the T/R61 fauly nVidia GPUs...
