W510 Screen Upgrade (Replacement)

#1 Post by evanski » Thu Mar 13, 2014 9:00 pm

Hi,

Im hoping you guys can help me. I just bought a refurb 510 from here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834312922

I'm hoping to upgrade the screen to the maximum resolution possible. I saw a post about it on here:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=91529

I looked around on ebay and found a bunch of screen options, but I'm having trouble figuring out exactly which ones are compatible with my laptop. I also *really* want a lenovo matte screen rather than a 3rd party one. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

You can upgrade from the stock HD+ (1600 x 900) to an FHD (1920 x 1080).

One of the Lenovo FRU part numbers is 04W1544. The manufacturer and their part number is AU Optronics B 156H01 V4.

If you can understand the workings of a screwdriver the swap can be done in 10 minutes especially if you have never done this before.

The AU Optronics B 156H01 V4 was the top of the FHD panels at that time. But it's not manufactured anymore, so pay attention where you buy that they don't offer a "compatible" panel.

Here is a video of a LCD swap on W520. It should be the same for W510. That guy was doing it for the first time and after 11 minutes he was done with it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm5kzo4NENc

And I recommend getting new screw cover stickers from eBay so it ends up being like new again. They're like 5 USD from China.

///When you'll get the new LCD, tell us if there are some bad pixels or any other imperfections. I heard a rumor that Lenovo sourced LCDs are of a better quality, that eBay the LCDs are factory rejects or something :|

I'm gonna give my "new" W510 a facelift :)
Or, at least I'm going to try to give my "new" W510 a facelift :?

I did it! :)
My 'new' W510 now has a 1920x1080 FHD-Glossy screen. I ordered from laptopscreens.com, and when I changed the screen, the back tags on the new and old both appeared to be the same LG brand. I plan on using this W510 for netflix and amazon instant videos.
One more learning step for this geek wannabe

Oh my, my, my... Tyrene, you are soooooooooooooooo untrusting... I didn't ask you for pics of your cloning project, now did I????

If you want pics, watch the youtube video referenced by Sleepy664 above -- it was all I could do not to loose the tiny screws when I replaced the screen, so I didn't tak pics. I guess it really is an extremely easy process, but it made me nervous, so it took me longer than the ten minutes sugested in this thread -- about 30 or so... but that included trying to find the one tiny screw I dropped. It was also a quick and easy process to order the screen I wanted from laptopscreens.com -- I think the guy in the video mentions his screen came from there, so I googled to make sure it had good reviews, and then jumped in.

Now back to my celebration after it was interrupted by such suspicion

Slight OT:

If you need a glossy screen, it is possible to remove the anti-glare coating from a matte screen.

You just lay some damp paper towels over a screen for like 6-12 hours...and then the top layer can be peeled of. And voilà – a glossy screen :)

///I've just tried that on an old Asus A6R which won't boot...I wasn't very carefull so it got scratched in the process, but it can really be done :)

...more can be found by Google.

Pretty soon you will be able to do another swap like it is no big deal :D

I was just having a little jest emtee3511. No suspicious inferences intended :)

Well, unfortunately, my son (who just returned from Korea last night) broke the screen on his T410 in transit :(

So I need to figure out what screen his machine takes -- Type/Model = 2522-2AU.
It's current screen is Intel HD Graphics 15.4" 1280x800 LCD

I'm a slow learner, and I most likely I already have this info in my senior brain somewhere -- but my RAM is malfunctioning, and I can't seem to access the info

Any guidance would be appreciated...

According to Lenovo website and Google it looks like there are these options:

1280×800 (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... MIGR-74567):
FRU 42T0725: Samsung LTN141AT15
FRU 42T0729: LG LP141WX5
FRU 42T0733: AU Optronics B141EW05 V.4

Upgrade to 1440×900 (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-74568):
FRU 42T0727: Samsung LTN141BT09
FRU 42T0731: LG LP141WP3
FRU 42T0735: AU Optronics B141PW04 V.0

(If I was looking right...)

Thanks very mcuh Sleepy664! That's the info I wanted to make sure of -- I didn't want to order and find out I'd misunderstood what I needed. I think my son might like glossy, but not sure if I can find one.

Now to start my screen search :jhem:
