t60 tpm

#1 Post by lab » Fri Mar 14, 2014 10:56 am

I'm thinking of using win7 bitlocker encryption for the SSD in my t60, and as I understand it I must use the tpm chip to store the password. How secure is this tpm chip?

Personally I would use software encryption, like BitLocker or other method, depending on your OS (TrueCrypt, LUKS, GELI, whatever).

If your hardware fails, you can access your data without using a ThinkPad.

But is it possible to use bitlocker without the tpm chip? If I set up bitlocker it says I must enable tpm and I don't have to set a password for bitlocker, only for the tpm.

Wikipedia says it is possible to use BitLocker without TPM on Windows 7, but not on Windows Vista.

I have run some test and unfortunately bitlocker slow things down a bit to much for my liking.

I'm thinking of buying a SSD with built in encryption instead, perhaps Intels 520, but then there is the question of how secure the HDD password is? If the password is in the bios rom or stored on the SSD itself.
