My X60t running Ubuntu 12.10 (Kernel 3.5.0-46-generic) volume buttons work. They change the volume, but not the master volume you'd find under the volume icon in the taskbar.
I open alsamixer under a console and none of the volume controls change when I press any of the buttons. However, after hitting F6 > "Thinkpad Console Audio Control" I can then change "Console" volume.
How do I tie button presses to change Ubuntu's master volume? Also, volume buttons are tied to Ubuntu's master volume on my T500.
Thanks!
-Tim

Re: X60t Volume Buttons Ubuntu 12.10
On a X60t (and I assume all 60 generation ThinkPads) the volume buttons control a separate "hardware" volume that is independent of the "software" system volume, therefore it doesn't require OS support and work everywhere even before an OS is booted. It's the same behavior in Windows, where pressing the volume buttons display an OSD volume bar but does not change the system volume. Starting from the 61 generation the volume buttons control system volume and depend on OS driver support.
