T30 Hard drive in T22?

#1 Post by mikejcmurray » Mon May 16, 2005 9:49 pm

My friend's T30 motherboard crashed. He wants to try putting his hard drive into my T22 to get any data off.

Is this feasible? We don't want to mess up our computers but he would like to get his data off the hard drive as soon as possible. Thanks

Yes, the HD would be a straight swap into your T22, but are you certain it isn't the cause of your friend's T30 demise? E.g., have a virus?

If you install it in your T22, best to use protection!

It turns out it didn't work. We got the blue screen when XP would start to boot up. Could this be because my computer has 2000? After my hard drive was put back in everything was back to normal. Was it not booting up because my computer is set up for a different operating system?

No, it's because there's such a large difference between the T30 and your T22.

I neglected to mention that you should have started the system in SAFE mode.

Possibly you could put it in an external slim usb case and get the data off that way. Probably run about $10-15 for a case.

Slightly related question - I'm potentially going to be moving a drive from a T20 to a T23. Last time I did this, I believe it blue screened straight away (different hardware) and I didn't try the safe mode option. Long story, but I don't want to re-build the O/S if I can help it - the goal is to simply put the T20's drive in the T23 with as little fuss as possible.

So, if I were to put the drive in the T23, start in safe mode - is it then possible to fix any other problems that were causing the blue screen? This is a Windows 2000 laptop.

There is a difference in the chipset on the motherboard, but may work. It is kind of 50/50. At minimum, you will still need to install quite a few T23 specific drivers.
