ThinkPad X1 Carbon WWAN Upgrade Question

#1 Post by VMarco » Thu Mar 20, 2014 2:51 am

Hi all! I just ordered the ThinkPax X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (20A70037US, i7, 8GB, 256GB, Touch). The only thing I wanted and could not get with it is the WWAN Card.

I already have the 2011 version of the X1 (1286-CTO) which comes with the Gobi 300-0 WWAN Card (Sierra Wireless MC8355 – Gobi(TM) 3000). I have been trawling the net and forums to check if I can pull out the Gobi 3000 from the older X1 and use it successfully in the X1 Carbon 2nd Gen. Is the Gobi 3000 compatible with X1 Carbon 2nd Gen? Will drivers or software be an issue? Are the slots compatible?

I welcome any and all advice. Thanks!

VMarco
Best wishes,

Wait till you get the new one, then transfer the card (assuming your new machine also has WWAN option with WWAN antenna wires) and install the matching drivers.

My X1C (3444) has a slot for a SIM card but the WWAN slot is empty and the antenna wires aren't installed. Assuming the antenna is available for purchase, does it have to be installed behind the screen bezel, or is there a good alternative that doesn't require removing the screen?

That X1C is a rather flimsy machine, but there should be enough space in the lid (according to the HMM).
Don't know where else to put the antenna wires.
