toshiba M2 or IBM T41

#1 Post by texref » Fri Jun 18, 2004 8:46 pm

both are simular in weight (in the 4.5-5.0 lb range). They will both have simular specs (512 RAM, 60 GB HD, 1.7 Ghz centrino, 802.11b/g/a, bluetooth, etc). I'm just wondering if anyone has used both systems and your thoughts on them. 8)
T42 2373-M1U on order (11/9/05 @0209 hours. recieved on11/17/05 @1300 hours)

I really like Toshibas. They are better than HPs dells, compaqs and emachines. At compusas they sell 3-1 veruss the others. However when it comes to business machines it seems that all companies go up in quality so it is really a win win. I am still also sort of deciding on the two computers also. i am waiting for my college to update their list of Toshibas. I have found that equally priced Toshiba coms with a 60gb while the T41 or T42 comes with a 40Gb. However with 3 year warranty they end up being closer in price since Toshibas come with 1 year but 3 years $199. I feel it is a win win situation. Are you sure about those specs for the IBM?. If it comes with a/b/g and a 60gb I could have sworn the IBM was at least 300 dollars more.

Supposedly the Toshiba's keyboard sucks. I'd post to a more general board (AnandTech or Arstechnica) to see if people there have any feedback.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

The keyboard most definitely sucks. My father got suckered into getting one, and he has regretted his purchase for a year. As soon as I get my t42p and he sees the superior quality of it, he will probably get one as well.

Toshibas do have cooler cases, if that means anything to you.

How about this to add to your thoughts. I just moved from a Toshiba Portege 2000 to a Thinkpad T42. You think if I was really happy with the Portege 2000, I'd stick with Toshiba right? The Portege 2000 was my third Toshiba... no more.

I just formatted the Portege 2000 and in the process of installing WinXP, it gave me a BSOD. Twice... I don't even know if I can get the [censored] system up and running anymore.

It is actually quite interesting how close they are in quality, size, 12.3-10.1 x1.2/1.4-Toshiba and 12.2 in x 10 in x 1.1 in T42, weight (both 4.9).

Plus toshiba has larger hd drive, firewire, and bluetooth for a little less than T42. T42 does have the titanium on top and bottom which may be priceless in a serious drop. But serious drops should never happen with thousan dollar machines.

You know what is interseting. I have been reading so much about these two machines and trying to decide on which one and I have never seen or touched either of them. I need to get to a local college bookstore very quickly. Quality either way
