Upgrading old IBM ThinkPads

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Sat Mar 22, 2014 9:40 pm

Back in the days I remeber MB size HDDs to 1GB and 32MB RAM as max. I still use all my ThinkPads on my list, most just to mess around with. I was woundering if anyone ever made a bios update for IBM ThinkPads T20 and below to handle atleast 1GB of RAM, My T20 is maxed at 512MB along with my 600X and then my 380Z and 560X is 192MB max "128MB stick with 64MB built in". Also even if the bios was customly updated, did anyone ever make a custom 1GB stick to fit all these type of RAM slots? I think it would be funny to see a IBM ThinkPad T20 with a Intel Core i5/i7 and 4GB RAM. But I dont think the GPU wouldnt be upgradable as I think all laptops GPUs are built in to their boards. Wish they wernt, my T40 and R50 would of been a easy fix instead of a board replacement witch I bought both Intel GPU boards. But I think sometime in the future I think this could be possible, some kinda of 3D print your own motherboard and for example using the T20 again. It could have that Intel Core i7 with a latest Nvidia or ATi graphics chip plus 1 USB 3.0 over its old USB 1.0 port. SATA plug instead of its IDE for HDD, 8GB-16GB Max RAM. not sure for the LCD at this point but get the idea, maybe can still make some kinda connectors on the board for the keyboard and LCD.

There exist in Earth at least three, 1 Gio PC133 SDRAM SO-DIMM. Or at least they did exist, but who knows, maybe they have since been junked. I saw these custom pieces listed in eBay a few years ago.

Care to elaborate on what 128MB RAM stick do you use in your 560X?

If I learn how to use drill saws and weld magnesium confidently, I'll be cutting away certain laptops. I got the idea from comparing an X200 bottom to a T20 body... but it wouldn't bring much use, but I did just read up that keyboards can be connected to tablets...

I think I found use for my 380Z or no video 560.
There will probably be others.

Welding magnesium.

Wouldn't that just cause a fire?
