My T42 sometimes takes a longtime to shut down. It seems to depend on how long its been turned on. When it does this the system idle time is in the area of 90% which I think it should be.
I have made sure that MS .NET Frameworks 1.0 sp2, 1.1 sp3, 2.0 sp2, 3.0 sp2, and 3.5 sp1 are all installed and working.
I just now got my ThinkPad to freeze by unchecking "Show Updates" at the top of the "Add or Remove Programs" frame.
The OS is WinXP sp3; The Browser is Firefox ver. 28.0, Thunderbird ver. 24.3.
I just turned off my TninkPad by removing the battery, which is a pain.
Turning it back on and going to the Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs the 'Show Updates' is still checked. Clicking on it with my pointer the check mark finally disappears, this time the system doesn't crash and burn, but continues to function.
Under "Currently installed programs:" there seems to be a redundancy.
MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - X86 9.0.30729.17 Size: 9.64MB
MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - X86 9.0.30729.6161 Size: 10.20MB
And then there is a MS Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable and that all.
The above redundancy just doesn't look right to me, but what do I know. I'm only a user.
Does anybody have any thought or ideas of where or what may be causing this problem?

Re: Takes a long time to shut down
This sounds like my experience (even the installed software is similar) on my T42 shortly before my wireless card completely failed.
In my case, I hadn't used to card it for years, but Windows may have been trying to communicate with it at startup and shutdown.
You may want to try disabling it in software or physically removing it to see if it solves your problem.

Re: Takes a long time to shut down
Hi to all:
I have the maximum amount of ram that the machine will take.
I don't have an internal wireless.
One problem I discovered was the Ultra Nav driver was not installed.
I asked Lenovo for Windows recovery disk for the T42 but their supplier
says that that they don't support the T42 any more.
It is possible that not all the WinXP drivers for the ThinkPad T42 may not
be installed, but I have no way of knowing because of my inexperience.
On the Internet I can find all kinds of adds for a T42 recovery disk, but
who do you trust?
I have found that practically all Internet adds are 'bait' and 'switch'.
They say the s/w is free, but there are always strings attached.
