Slow suspend/resume on battery?

Since loading Windows 2000 on my a21m, I found the suspend/resume process to be a little frustrating.

When on AC power, the suspend and resume process is very fast: 3-6 seconds. When on battery power, the suspend and resume process is very slow: 80-120 seconds.

Is there some setting or patch to improve the suspend/resume times when on battery power?
