Rifle Scope Question

Uby's 10/22 rifle has a 4/32 Simmons scope on it. We are having issues with keeping it sighted. Granted the kid is not the easiest person in the world on things, but generally he does not bang it around or abuse it. I did notice that when he puts it in the foam padded case, it was being stored upside down, so that when closed in the upright position, the scope was on the bottom of the case, gun upside down. Case was never dropped but was moved around. Could this cause the sighting issues?
