Anyone use EXTERNAL desktop harddrive for thinkpad R40?

#1 Post by vk60402 » Tue May 17, 2005 1:46 pm

I guess my questions are really as follows:

Is there a difference between external harddrives for desktops vs. external notebook harddrives besides the size and power supply?

Is there a danger in using DESKTOP computer external harddrives (with their own power supplies) and plug then into to the notebook USB (provided the DESKTOP harddrive comes with the USB connector?)

Thanks,

Should be no problem. I have a R31 and have used my 2 Desktop USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard drives/enclosures on the R31. Note that my R31 only had USB 1.1, So I'm plugging these devices into a Cardbus adaptor that supports USB 2.0. I also have a couple of 2.5" USB 2.0 external drives that are self powered and they work the same on the desktop as they work on the ThinkPad.

The only time there is a problem with the self powered units is when the cardbus has no power. The cardbus actually has its own power pack. So if your on the road and using batteries, you can't use the external drives since there is no power being supplied to the cardbus adaptor.
