What video card is in your 2503?
I'm thinking of getting a graphics card for my Advanced Dock, I currently have an X300 in it, just for when I plug in an Intel graphics machine.
I don't want a very expensive card... probably looking at less than $40. I was hoping to get an NVIDIA card, but I'm probably going to end up with a Radeon 6450.
I'm just wondering, because I know a few of you on here have 2503s, what video card do you have in it, if you have one?

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
Hi,
I'm using XFX Radeon 5570 2GB on my 2503 dock ... fit perfectly inside the videocard bay ...
the downsides are :
1. I have to add 4 supports under the dock, because the screws for the heatsink are too high and it makes the bay cover a little bumpy ...
2. The D-SUB output connector is too close to the edge so I cannot plug D-SUB cable, so I'm using DVI to D-SUB converter
So I bought an extender cable for the PCIe slot to use the D-SUB connector from 5570 card
Thanks to TuuS for selling me one advance dock

Take a look at this page. Your browser may automatically translate it from Bulgarian to English (Firefox 28 does this for me) if not then use google translate to translate the page. Never knew that an advanced dock had a port for video cards! Nice to see that there are options for extending the usage out of older ThinkPads!

It's like... the most amazing port replicator ever manufactured by a company. It might not have been the most worthwhile piece of equipment over the 2504 or 2505 when the T60/61 first came out, but now that the low-power GPUs are ridiculously cheap, and have ridiculous amounts of power, I suspect the 2503 will be an ultimately sought solution to give your old Thinkpad just what it needs. It's also great for those who favor NVIDIA graphics over the T60's ATI, or T500/W500's ATI, and don't want to deal with finding a good NVIDIA T61.Never knew that an advanced dock had a port for video cards! Those video cards got really good reviews... and it's got close to the same tech as the 6450. But it's parked right on the outside line of my budget... I'd have to think about it.I'm using XFX Radeon 5570 2GB on my 2503 dock ... fit perfectly inside the videocard bay ...
I may have got hold of a passively cooled 6450 from my university, they said it might have a few problems. But i'll see.

When the systems were first introduced, I found very little value in the 2503 - being huge, heavy, expensive, loud - all the bad things, with very few benefits, since contemporary compatible PCIe graphics were not much stronger (if at all), than what you could get built-in. But the modern low-power GPUs are definitely sufficient to turn your old Thinkpad into a reasonable low-range gaming machine for the games that are not too demanding, certainly on par with older Core 2 Duo PCs.

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
I don't think so. All you've got is the Series 3 Port Replicator, which is closer in function to the 2505 Dock. Which means it just provides a basic set of extra ports, and nothing more. Someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's all Lenovo has offered up for current Thinkpads. Is there anything like this for T430, except Express Card adapter?
Really, the only manufactured Port Replicators I've ever seen that are this extreme are the 2503 itself, and the Dock II, which can be used with the T4x/T3x/X3x/A3x, etc. It has a PCI slot, not a PCI-E slot, so no super-awesome graphics cards... but USB 3.0, Capture Card? Heck yes. The PCI-E port in the 2503 works the same way too... you don't have to use it for just video cards.
Can anyone point out another Dock Replicator that has this crazy of a feature set?

@Medessec. I cannot think of any other port replicator that is essentially a horizontal mini-tower!
@kony. I believe there is the Vidock and the do-it-yourself PE4L-series (did a look on youtube and their are tons of videos regarding these adapters) of expresscard adapters. They might be worth looking into. I believe some forum members use this method of expanding the capabilities of their ThinkPads or any other laptops that have expresscard slots.

Well, there are also the Series 3 Mini-Dock (4337), which is like the 2504, and the Series 3 Mini-Dock Plus (4338), which adds a few more video ports and eSATA, but still nowhere near the 2503's expansion capabilities.Medessec wrote:All you've got is the Series 3 Port Replicator, which is closer in function to the 2505 Dock. No USB 3.0 to PCI cards as far as I know, and even if there were - they would be severely limited by the bus to the point of being barely useful at all.Medessec wrote:the Dock II, which can be used with the T4x/T3x/X3x/A3x, etc. It has a PCI slot, not a PCI-E slot, so no super-awesome graphics cards... but USB 3.0, Capture Card? ExpressCard is a good way to add USB3.0 capabilities to *10/*20 series as well as to the old T43. Older models compatible with the Dock II have to go without.

That's why I said "except express card", I know about them. Unfortunately, as I read lots of tests of these, it seems they are quite bad for internal display gaming (but give much greater performance with external monitor) and the performance varies from game to game and even from version of the game to version of the game (like old versions of Shogun 2 Total War and Rome 2 Total War having a decent performance with eGPUs, however due to optimizations in patches, they are unplayable in new versions, although for non-eGPU cards the performance risen).emeraldgirl08 wrote:

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
The T4x only has a dual CardBus PCMCIA cage, no ExpressCard... but I am in agreement- it's absolutely amazing what you can get in ExpressCard. I did an ebay search for ExpressCard HDMI capture cards, and they exist! They're very expensive, but so are regular PCI-E capture cards.ExpressCard is a good way to add USB3.0 capabilities to *10/*20 series as well as to the old T43. Older models compatible with the Dock II have to go without.
On my Clevo D900F, it has a really annoying tidbit where they put all 4 USB 2.0 ports that the laptop's exterior has, on the right side of the laptop, right where your mouse goes. Annoying as heck, but there's a 54mm ExpressCard slot on the left side, where I have a USB 3.0 card plugged in, perfectly flush. So now-my Clevo has 2 USB 3.0 ports on it's left side that I can use. And I was worried it wouldn't grip, so if you tried unplugging devices from the card, you'd pull the card out with it, but it stays. Pretty awesome.
As for the PCI slot in the Dock II, I'm getting a Dock II soon, so I'll be able to play around with it. But as far as I know, the only video cards that can work with the Dock II are the Radeon 9250, and the X1300 and X1550...

Ah. You're right. I went and checked one of my T43s, and it does indeed have the ExpressCard/CardBus configuration.
Huh. How about that. I feel kinda dumb... I just really remembered it having the CardBus only, from the numerous times I've taken T4x laptops apart.

Med, what do you want to use this card for? Most cards in that price range are generally a waste of money, unless you can't use onboard video for whatever reason and need a display output.

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
I'm just trying to see if it's possible to get a graphics card in the Dock II, despite the PCI bus. Many people say that it's a pretty dumb idea, because any good card for PCI is really just a PCI-E graphics card on a PCI-E to PCI bridge, which causes problems in the Dock II.
I guess I'm willing to find out. Some of these cards are dirt cheap anyways... anything less than $15 to me is fine.

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
I have a low-profile MSI Radeon HD 6570 1gb in my 2503 now. It works fine so far however the fan is awfully noisy from the power supply in the dock! The fan from the graphics card is quiet in comparison even if it is pushing air. Regardless as I had mentioned previously it is nice to squeeze out more usage for sure from my T500! Wish the x200-series had a dock similar to the 2503 as well! Certainly there are limitations however for my usage this setup will work just fine
Total cost of dock+card= $69 USD.
I propose we keep figuring out ways to extend the life of our older ThinkPads for as long as possible and contribute our findings to this forum!
Hope you all agree

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
I'd imagine you're also using that 6850 with it's own separate PSU... I really don't have anything against those solutions, but I think they're a bit much, and I do some serious gaming and CAD/3D design... so sending high res, high-clock video to an enthusiast-grade graphics card through a PCI-E 1x connection, especially that of ExpressCard, seems a bit sketch to me.I use a Radeon HD6850 with my W500 through an expresscard adapter. Works just fine!
I was looking into a Radeon 7750 for my 2503, but it's just too much, and I don't use my Frankenpad enough for gaming to permit that. I'd have to sell my D900F and W700ds first... which, I'm kinda bent on NOT doing. If you understand
The 6450 is working brilliantly and it's running DX11 games, and all the rest. But in terms of raw-power, it hardly tops my Frankenpad's NVS140M, which is quite pathetic really... and quite down putting. It is insanely useful though, and brilliant having a DX11 card in your 2503 regardless.
I know!!! It's amazing despite how incredible the 2503 is, how cheaply one can be had. Actually, if you think about it...Total cost of dock+card= $69 USD.
An HTPC, with a Mini ATX motherboard, AMD A6 APU, 500GB HDD, and 300W PSU will probably tally up to $300-$400, whereas a W500 with a T9400(at least) and WSXGA+ screen, and the ADDED cost of a 2503 with a 6450 or your 6570 in it will be about the same, $300-$400. And it'll be nearly as powerful, and you can unhook the W500 from your 2503 and take it to your friends house.
The 2503 I believe is the last dock of it's kind... I'm pretty sure because of the theory I stated earlier. At the time, the 2503 is an overpriced, impractical piece of kit, that doesn't return it's function's worth in money until 7 years down the road. It's 7 years down the road, and 2503s are an absolutely bonkers good solution to ressurrect any old Thinkpad it's compatible with. But Lenovo didn't find the financial viability in making "2503"s for other Thinkpads... so there's no more.Wish the x200-series had a dock similar to the 2503 as well!

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
I could see a significant difference in two games I have stored on my hard drive- Resident Evil 5 and Bioshock Infinite. If I use the ATI 3650 graphics in my T500 then it is not as fluid as the MSI card in the dock. I do not own an XBOX 360 but my nephews and younger siblings do and this seems just as smooth from what I have seen so far. I am in the midst of semester projects so I am not able to do more testing at this point. The fan is quiet and cool from the graphics card however the PSU fan is quite noisy. I wonder if there is a mod (aside from disconnecting the fan) to reduce PSU fan noise? Regardless it is an interesting project so far

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
I think the extra power draw of the video card, and the really small design of the 2503's PSU is why the fan needs to be on like that. It's worse on the Dock II for X3x, A3x and T4x, I have a PCI 8400GS plugged into that(no driver installed yet) and the PSU fan on that seems to go to max, then stays there. Quite alarming.
I'll have to do some benchmarking and testing on my 6450 too. What I found interesting was when I ran FurMark... because it's a passively cooled card, it throttles at 65C, and just induces horrible framerates until the card gets appropriately cool, which in FurMark is never. So it just sits there fluctuating violently between 60C-65C. I also had the chance to run CoD: World at War, and I was able to run all settings max with Anti-aliasing off(I was on my T5500 Low-power Intel gfx T60, with no CPU power) and the game ran very smoothly, with the occasional framerate drop, and of course... the flamethrower causes poor framerates, but it always does on low-power graphics cards.
I need to try some of the other games I play... such as Minecraft. Minecraft does insane work on both the CPU and GPU...

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
I pretty much went into this project blind. I intially only had pictures of the dock and some measurements from sources all over the net! I was almost positive some of the measurements for the card and available PCI-e card space were inaccurate. By the time I had the dock in my possession I figured I might as well spring for the card that I found on sale. According to some sources (especially ones with photos and a well constructed description) the card I chose would fit however my measurements were telling me that it would barely fit! lol The MSI also seemed to get good reviews for its low-power draw, ability to game on medium (I was realistic and not expecting a PS3 equivalent), and also because someone said it stayed cool.
So many factors to take into consideration!
I thought about purchasing the XFX variant of the HD 6570 but noticed it was a 64-bit memory versus the 128-bit memory of the MSI card. I also considered the power it would need. From what I read the card would not draw too much power.
What I feel is nice is that if one has a T-, Z-, or R-series that only has the Intel graphics this dock would be a significant improvement! I say this in terms of the T500/R500/T400/R400 with Intel X4500MHD. I posted a link to the WEI (I know...a terrible benchmark
) that my initial run of the 2503 advanced dock w/MSI card generated. I know that in comparison Intel graphics on my T500 (also a T400 from experience) will generate a WEI 'Graphics' subscore of 4.1 and a 'Gaming graphics' subscore of 3.4. With the dock and card the graphics scores have nearly doubled!
Not too shabby for $69 USD. There are caveats (e.g., PSU FAN, have to use an external monitor, not a portable solution) of course but I only intend on using the dock for running games or other demanding graphical applications if needed. It is reassuring to know that it is there if I should need it
In the meantime any tests I could run for graphics that I could report here? I am not too familiar with graphical tests but I do not mind running and reporting any when I get the time.

It is quite pathetic and very surprising. HD6450 should be more powerful than the 8400GS by far, definitely the mobile variant!Medessec wrote:The 6450 is working brilliantly and it's running DX11 games, and all the rest. I wonder if it's the throttling you mention that is the problem.
That sounds like horrible design. I have a passively cooled 6600GT AGP, which goes up to 80C and above that and doesn't throttle. Then again, that 6600GT has one heck of a heatpipe. Maybe the small cooler on that HD6450 is just not up to the job (again surprising, considering that it is a very low-power card).Medessec wrote:I'll have to do some benchmarking and testing on my 6450 too. Here's a stock picture of the actual card I own: http://images17.newegg.com/is/image/new ... -TS?$S300W$That sounds like horrible design. I'll have to do some more playing around with it... as soon as I finish with trying to get the 8400GS PCI to work in my Dock II.
Well, again... I'll have to mess with it some more. It just seems like with the games I play, the NVS 140M does astoundingly well, for how old it is. So going from it, to a Radeon 6450, doesn't really give me a lot of zing. I mean, in World at War, the NVS 140M can run everything on max, but at lower resolutions. (Not the full UXGA my Frankenpad can manage, but definitely 1024x768) The 6450 can run the game smooth, and on higher resolutions. I'll have to run FurMark on both and check the framerates, as well as try some different games, or even scored simulations. It is quite pathetic and very surprising. 1600x1200 is almost 2.5 times the pixels of 1024x768. If that's the difference you are seeing, then it's by no means fair to say that the card is not way more powerful.
Maybe, if you are satisfied with running at 1024x768, and if you only play games that the NVS140M copes with OK, you don't really take advantage of the extra power, that's another question.

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
Yeah... I understand your inquiry... so really, I just need to get some exact results. Because the game play super smooth(smoothness ticks over best with me) at XGA on the NVS 140M, but the 6450 runs the game relatively smooth(not as smooth, but pretty close) on full UXGA. Really... it could be getting 34 FPS on the 6450 running UXGA, but the full 60FPS on the NVS 140M, running XGA. Still not particularly fair, but I still need to post some serious results, instead of stirring up vagueness here.1600x1200 is almost 2.5 times the pixels of 1024x768. Again, if I had my way, I'd have a 7750 in my 2503, but the 6450 is still an amazing piece of new tech to slam on the back of all my Thinkpads, especially the "Scamp T60", or power-saver Intel gfx with a T5500. I might just end up selling that on here, with a 2503 and my 6450 in it, so I can get another 2503 with a better video card in it.

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
I just ordered a 2503 from the US, so it is on its way here these days. So you guys can feel free to draw a conclusion on a "balanced" graphics card that is a good choice for this dock. Balanced, meaning no extra power supply needed, no maxing out of the built in PSU of the dock, fits inside the dock with no modifications, and gives a noticeable graphics improvement over, let's say a ATI X1300/1400. My 2503 will also be used with my Nvidia'ed T60 Frankenpad when it's finished, but there is probably even less to gain there.
I also have to add that my graphics requirements rarely exceed full screen movies, as I never do gaming. So for me it's mostly just theoretical in the sense that I know that the graphics capabilities in the 2503 are there, but that I will rarely need them.
As we discussed in another thread here, the really old Selectadocks were even more impressive when it came to all the peripherals you could connect to them. But those days are gone, and the 2503 seems to be the last of the docks that really adds any functionality like this to a Thinkpad.

Seems like quite a bit of money, space and noise for something that you need in a theoretical sense.Norway Pad wrote:I also have to add that my graphics requirements rarely exceed full screen movies, as I never do gaming. Re: What video card is in your 2503?
In my case it is more interest than actual needs. Find out what can be done, and to keep a selection of good equipment. Strictly speaking, my old T43 would probably still have covered 90% of my computing needs, and if I needed something newer, a T410/510 could have been had for less money than the total cost of the T601(?) Frankenpad I am purchasing parts for right now. Well, maybe not just interest. My main use for the 2503 will probably be to keep it next to our tv, connected through HDMI, and use it as a multimedia Plug-In for the laptops instead of the old Shuttle XPC I have there today. So a HDMI output was an important factor that I didn't mention.
But if it gets too noisy, that might be a problem. So noise is a factor worth considering. From what I have read so far, I get the impression that the fan in the dock is the main source of noise. And this is controlled by the temperature inside the dock, basically generated by current draw from the built in PSU and the temperature of the card. Hence the request for a card with "balanced" level of performance.

Re: What video card is in your 2503?
Alright, I've got some actual testing done. And I think I've determined that the underperforming qualities of my Radeon 6450 are stemming not from the card itself, but from the 2503, probably it's PSU.
I used PerformanceTest Version 7 for all this testing. I ran the CPU, 2D and 3D graphics tests for the regular scoring system, and ran some benchmarking tests for different configurations of the 3D tests.

The 2503 doesn't show any other problems other than that. Of course as you can clearly see, when compared to other machines much more suited for the job... there's really no game in it, but between the Radeon 6450 and the Frankenpad's built in NVS 140M, it's very much head-to-head, under these circumstances. I'll have to see if I can confirm the power issue my putting the 6450 Radeon in a desktop computer with a proper PSU and seeing if the card has any hidden power to release.
If anyone has any benchmarking software to suggest, I can run it to compare scores. All the computers in the 3D tests, I have out, so I can run it on those too-provided it's easy and quick to install... Very interesting. Thank you for the detailed report.
Looking forward to the desktop tests with the HD6450 you mentioned, to see if it is indeed a dock power issue as you suspect.
