If I buy a port replicator..

#1 Post by Ryan T. » Tue May 17, 2005 4:55 pm

and hook it up to my 19" Dell LCD, will I be able to keep my T42's screen closed while using the Dell as the sole monitor?

I've tried this and it doesn't seem very possible (or at least so that I can figure out) without the port replicator II.

Just wondering if I should spend the 100 bucks or save my money.

It has nothing to do with the docking station you use. You just need to configure your laptop not to go into standby or hipernation mode when you close the screen.

Or start it up with the screen closed.

hmm alright I'll look into that, thanks.

In everyones opinion is the docking station a good investment? I like the idea of the increased mobility without unplugging 500 things.

I love having my port replicator II. I only have power, network, printer, and speakers plugged into it, and it's great to just pop it off and go versus unhooking every one individually (and hoping the stupid cable doesn't fall between my desk and the wall).

I second the recommendation on having the port replicator. I have PR setups at home and my office and it is very nice to snap it in and turn it on without messing with all the cables, as well as having a separate keyboard and mouse.

The best thing I've discovered about it is having the DVI output to my Dell 20" monitors at each workstation - awesome! (1600x1200 res).

If you get more than one PR make sure to get an extra power cord too since these don't come with it (they do with the docking stations).

Also, I haven't had any regrets about not getting a docking station given the extra $$. I can still use the two laptop USB ports when it is in the PR if I really need them which is seldom.
