What has died in my X31?

#1 Post by Gord K. » Fri Apr 18, 2014 1:53 pm

I haven't used my X31 (2672-58U according to the Serial number label) for quite awhile. The last time I used it, everything was working fine. When I went to power it up the other day I got:

ERROR
0271: Check date and time settings.
ERROR
1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card.

I understand there are issues with network cards and I have heard about the 1802 error before, BUT this was a working notebook computer and nothing has been changed except it hasn't been used for quite awhile.

Do I just need a new CMOS battery or has something else gone?

Thanks,

Gord

The dead CMOS has probably reset the removed 1802 error (there is a CD to remove this error, google it)

Get a new CMOS, set the correct time and date, remove the WIFI card, apply the 1802 error fix, install the WIFI card again and everything should be fine again.

Thats exactly what has happened.

Once the CMOS Battery died, the BIOS defaulted back to original...and it hates the NON-factory wireless card.
Unfortunately, you will need a Media Wedge for the CD-Rom to remove the 1802 hack. Its an easy linux based program that flips a flag in the bios to turn off the IBM white list for WiFi cards.

Thanks both of you. It was the date and time error that clued me in to the dead CMOS battery. Off to the store I go, hopefully the local battery place will have a replacement.

Okay, so I went to the local Battery Man today. He told me he could make me a CMOS battery and it would be $25, come back on Monday. He said a replacement for the nearly dead laptop battery would be over $100. Any ideas where I can order these (preferably in Canada) online?

Thanks.

eBay should have a good supply of each. The CMOS battery should run around US$5; not sure what the main battery goes for nowdays, but I suspect that US$30 will get you an aftermarket battery. You probably will not find an original/factory battery that's new given the age of the system. For any used or "refurbished" item, I'd ask for the number of charge cycles, the first used date and the full charge capacity in order to gauge how healthy the battery is. If they can't or won't tell you that information, move on. If they say that it "lasts for two hours", then I'd ask how it was tested; powered up at only the BIOS screen or actively being used (web browsing, playing a game or DVD, etc.). And also if they have will offer some sort of compensation/return if you find that it only lasts 15 minutes.

You may also find somebody here in the Marketplace that has what you need and if you're lucky, they'll also be in Canada.

25$ for a CMOS battery is just plain crazy. Just get the next best ebay offer for 5 bucks or something (new items, doesn't matter if it isn't original IBM) and be happy. I've never had any problems so far.

Thanks RealBlackStuff. I saw that the CMOS battery was a common CR3032, I just wasn't sure how I would attach the leads. Now I know and will make my own.

Thanks Ray. I took a quick look in the marketplace here but didn't see any ads for the batteries I was looking for. A Google search turned up Battery Depot's Canadian site and batteries for my X31 and wife's T40 with 1-3 day express shipping and taxes came to $85 CDN.

I don't spend a lot of time on this forum anymore but I really appreciate the fast friendly help when I do come here.

Thanks, and Happy Easter for those who celebrate it.

Gord
