Audio driver for Windows 7 on T42p

#1 Post by lordvalumart » Sun Apr 20, 2014 9:22 am

I'm installing Windows 7 on my elderly T42p and came across a problem with the audio driver. The solution isn't obvious so I thought I'd post it here so that Google can assist anyone else in the same situation.

After installing Windows 7, Windows Update successfully installed all the required drivers except the one for Soundmax audio. Google suggested that some people had had the same problem, but other folk stated that Windows Update found the audio drivers with no difficulties.

It turns out that the key is the settings you use for Windows Update:
- Go to the Control Panel and select "Devices and Printers"
- Right-click your T42p and select "Device installation settings"
- In response to the question "Do you want Windows to download driver software and realistic icons for your devices?" select "Yes, do this automatically". Other apparently-equivalent settings such as "Install driver software from Windows Update if it is not found on my computer" aren't good enough it seems.
- Go to the Control Panel and select "Device Manager"
- Right-click on your T42p and select "Scan for hardware changes"
- Windows Update should install the Soundmax driver
