T410s Screen Won't Turn Off When Lid Closed

#1 Post by alferz » Thu Apr 24, 2014 12:18 am

Hi all - I got a used T410s on ebay that had a cracked palmrest, so I ordered one for $20 on eBay from China and got it installed. In the process I had to remove the stuck-on touchpad below the palm-rest and transfer it to the new palm rest, it was glued pretty good but I was able to transfer it OK. Anyway, I got everything put back together and the touchpad, buttons, and keyboard all work fine. But now the screen won't turn off when the lid is closed (and it wont go to sleep either even though I have instructed Win7 to do so when the lid is closed in power options). I'm thinking I must have buggered up the lid close switch, but I cannot figure out where it is on this PC. Is it part of the touchpad assembly? I cant find anything about a switch in the service manual I have and Googling reveals next to nothing about this particular model. Anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.
Hopefully you haven't thrown away the old palm rest yet!
Turn it over and search along the three outer edges for a small rectangular piece of shiny metal, the so-called hall effect switch.
Looks like a very small magnet, maybe 8x3 mm (0.3x0.1 inch) or less. When found, transfer it to the new palm rest.
Your Chinese knock-off part obviously did not include that.
That's it.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

THANK YOU RBS for that tip! I was able to locate the hall switch, it turned out it was just to the right of the right click button on the underside of the palm rest. Without that tip I would never have noticed it because it was covered with a black piece of plastic so it just looked like a little black square, like a reinforcement part of the palm rest or something. I popped it out and the switch itself was shiny metallic like you mentioned - transferred it over to the knock-off (since it didnt feel very secure in the knockoff I dabbed a little hot glue on it to hold it in place), put everything back together and now the screen shuts off and the PC sleeps just like it is supposed to.

For future searchers here is an image of exactly where it was located on my T410S and what it looks like once removed. Thanks again RBS!

Hi!

I have quite the same problem,....but i haven't had the luck to find this shiny little peace of metal on this location on the palm,...and even on my X220 it's missing, too......changed palm and not even changed this little piece of metal.....so in both cases the lid is closed but nothing happens, not energy saving and not resuming, the sensor in the lid....this is the sensor, the part in the bezel muss be the magnet...is well functioning, i have controlled this with an magnet...

so where will i be able to find this little peace of metal that should stuck in the palmrest...in need it once for the palm of the T410s and once for the palm of the X220.

Especially i like to know if something like this http://www.ebay.de/itm/361243791757?_tr ... EBIDX%3AIT would be usable if the original part is missing completely.

Thanx a lot for helping!

Kindly regards,
