FOUND: T61p

#1 Post by oeuvre » Sun Apr 27, 2014 8:02 pm

Hi,

I miss my T60 dearly. Except I can't be bothered using a machine with 2GB RAM... and the T60 I used to have (sold it for $170 a year ago) had 1024x768 :(. I'm looking for 4GB RAM, 7200RPM HD or SSD if possible, 1680x1050 resolution... correct me if I got that res wrong. Looking to spend around $200. Was thinking of this but I wanted a second opinion. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad ... 1312013058

Based on the machine type and description , this T61 has the nvidia gpu. You have to check the date of production.

You're very unlikely to find a T61p with a "safe" date code for $200 unless you buy it from someone who is absolutely clueless about what they have.

I'm in possession of (and currently typing on) one that is likely the best you'll be able to find, but is way out of the suggested price range.

If you decide to spend more than originally intended on an outstanding example, feel free to PM me.

Hot [censored], you got a lovely machine there. Way out of my price range though... but I am sure someone will buy that beast.

Looking at the eBay pictures further, the machine is actually a T61, not a T61p as noted by the strip below the display. Not a big deal for me, I wouldn't mind a T61 either as long as it has the resolution and 4GB RAM.

Got one of those as well..... with a 08/10 date code. Not dead mint, but pretty clean. Still above your intended price range, though.

Again, another nice machine but out of my price range. Thanks though.

I can get these T61 models with nVidia graphics starting at about $99 for a barebones laptop. If you want an 08/08 or later production date that will more than double the price and if you want the ram upgraded to 4gb that too would be extra, but this gives you an idea of a starting point.

If you're looking for a reliable laptop I recommend biting the bullet and paying the price for one with the updated gpu, but if you do want to go the low-cost route, then be careful where you get one because there are many being sold online that have reflowed gpu chips that are certain to fail again and if you buy on a website like ebay you have a very limited amount of time to discover any defects and even if you do discover the gpu is unstable, you'd have a hard time proving it as ebay would likely require a letter from an expert if you had a dispute and such an evaluation could cost as much as the laptop.

If you'd like me to get you one of these you can send me a PM and we can discuss your needs vs the costs.

I bought one from another site for $225. 2.4GHz dual core, 1920x1200, not sure on the date of the GPU, but the pictures looked great and the machine seemed to be in great shape. Thanks again everyone!
