What is the best option when replacing a cooling system in the following ThinkPad?
T60p, widescreen 15,4'' (8743-CTO)
Core 2 Duo T7600 2.33GHz CPU
ATi FireGL 5250
The Hardware Reference Manual for the widescreen T60(p) lists only FRU 41W6409 as suitable for a widescreen T60p with a discrete GPU. In other threads, in these forums and elsewhere, I stubled upon suggestions of FRUs 41V9932 or 41W6407 - these are, however, suitable for a normal (i.e. non-widescreen) T60(p), according to the HRM for that model.
The questions so far:
- are FRUs 41V9932 and 41W6407 compatible with a widescreen T60p as well, or will only FRU 41W6409 work?
- should 41V9932 and 41W6407 be generally (i.e. mechanically) compatible with a widescreen T60p, will the 41V9932 be able to cool the T7600 CPU sufficiently, or would at least a 41W6407 be necessary due to it having a longer CPU heatpipe (extending to both vents)?
Alternatively, would a 3-heatpipe T61p heatsink fit, specifically this one (I think it is FRU 42X4685)? From what I heard it is generally a better solution as, apart from having a double CPU heatpipe, it is designed to make direct contact with the GPU, and has a better-quality fan than the T60(p) cooling systems. The question is whether it will fit mechanically into a widescreen T60p.
Many thanks in advance for a clarification on the above matters, which after reading a share of relevant information remain unclear to me.
T60p cooling system replacement/upgrade
Re: T60p cooling system replacement/upgrade
Alright, I have read some more and found out that generally the best combination is
- a T61(p) (with discrete graphics) heatsink (FRU 42W2820, 42W2028 or 42X4685), and
- a T500 (with discrete graphics) fan (FRU 45N5492, 42X5115, and possibly 42X4777).
Still, I have no idea if this combo can be successfully installed into a 15.4'' widescreen T60p with FireGL graphics, as so far I have not seen a mention of such a machine in any of the threads discussing this mod (it's basically all 14.1'' or 15'' 4:3 ThinkPads/frankenpads with integrated Intel or Nvidia graphics).
I can order the following parts:
FRU 42W2028/42x4685 (T61p HSF, for heatsink)
FRU 42X4777/42X5115 (T500 HSF, for fan)
though first I'd like to confirm whether it will work for my widescreen T60p. Could someone please shed a light on this?

Re: T60p cooling system replacement/upgrade
I have completed the cooling system swap. The thread can probably be locked now, given that nobody had bothered to reply anyway.
Re: T60p cooling system replacement/upgrade
Well you could let us know your results. Did those specific parts work for your system? How much have your temperatures improved?
Because I've glanced at this thread and didn't have any suitable knowledge or answers for you but would love to hear what you have to share now that you've done it.
